Strange (Auroral) Conditions again....

WUMY-830 from Memphis, TN is booming into Lexington, KY tonight. Been listening for over an hour... Absolutely No sign of WCCO, so probably more AURORA conditions going on tonight. WUMY IDs itself as Y105.5, which is a translator in Memphis. Now, here's the BEST PART... WUMY AM is licensed for 2 WATTS at night. That's right....TWO WATTS... On the top of the hour (1 AM EDT or Midnight in Memphis) They ID'd as WUMY AM and also gave the Translator callsign.

Who wants to bet the AM is cranking more than 2 Watts out??

LOL. Yeah I bet there's a switch "not thrown" somewhere and it's on day power. Still, that's a pretty impressive catch.

The dial is weird here on the Gulf Coast tonight as well. WODT 1280 is booming in with ESPN Deportes programming from New Orleans; I'm also hearing what appears to be KFLC 1270 from Fort Worth, also with Spanish language programming. Often clear as a bell.

Best of all, WLS was almost totally alone for a while earlier and I was able to not just hear but record some AM stereo content during a commercial break. So now I know my AM stereo Walkman DOES work properly after all these years.

Also, it may be worth a shot to try for KSEY 1230 out of Seymore, Texas, which is doing a DX test programme tonight until 2 am central. I heard (and recorded) some Morse and sweep tones, I think it was this station. Never got a positive ID, though. But if it's KSEY that's 1000 watts from west of Wichita Falls!

In the past I've heard some interesting 830 action. Sometimes WCCO is very audible, other times it's only KNCO. I did hear some type of Regional Mexican on 830 one time, chances are it was from Louisiana or somewhere, but it was pretty audible.

KUYO-WY and KFLT-AZ were on one time only at night recently, but I never heard IDs from them. They would both be new.

WUMY has been on all night (at least) the last two nights. I live just a couple miles from the tower, and there's no way that's the 2 watt signal. They forgot to turn off.

WFNO in New Orleans is on 830 and is regional Mexican as "La Raza" but if you heard them in the Pacific NW that would be one hell of a catch. They are highly directional to the southeast at night with just 750 watts. Their day pattern is more favourable to your direction, though.
