Strange books across the country

I'm noticing that alot of Top 40 Mainstream and AC stations jumped up this book. Hip Hop is down, Spanish formats are up.

Chicago shocker: US99 up.
Los Angeles shocker: KissFM beats Power 106 and a 3way tie for Spanish formats.

It's probally the Music. Usually when there's a slump in a certian music industry (Country, AC, Top 40) it's also a slump for ratings. Right now, I believe Country Music is starting a new trend, which is making it hot. Again, this is all my opinion.

Why is this a "shocker"?

One of the only consistent stations in Chicago....when you tune to US 99 you know exactly what you are going to get.

Country music is swinging back....new artists are really driving sales and ratings

Where else in town can you get Gretchen Wilson and Big and Rich? Those are some big selling artists!

What ratings jump? US99 was stable from Winter to Spring.

Regardless of ratings (matters somewhat for Infinity Broadcasting), US 99 has no competition on any city grade stick, so ratings aren't really much of an issue for a station with no competition.

Their competition is AC and Classic Rock, especially the latter.
______________

KIIS beating Power 106 was NOT a shocker. KIIS has moved decidely more rhythmic. Power has been attacked by KIIS being more rhythmic and KDAY signing on - as well as a new Hurban station which made some inroads in June.

As far as hip-hop goes, it's on fire in Riverside, CA - where KGGI and KWIE are 1-2 in the 18-34 cell while KIIS was up and KPWR, KKBT and KDAY also show up... Doesn't sound like the format is hurting to me...

It's likely the marketplace that dictates - but that statement was very general.

How in the world could the WJMK format change effect anything....it was at the end of the book....Man people are quick to expect changes.....won't see any REAL effect on the books until the Summer trends....more like the fall one!

How do you figure?

I can MAYBE see the AC thing...but not really.

Country (Especially US99) targets females 25-54....with an emphasis on the 25-34 area!

Targets is the key word. In general each market is a lil diff, but you are right, Female 25-54 is the norm. But, sometimes stations don't focus strcitly on their P1, but on their secondary demo, if it is close or had good numbers and can be sold too. Country appeals to the NASCAR demo which does consist of a lot of males.

US99 is really current based and unlike a lot of other country stations. Their gold tracks are not that old.

But, a lot of country outlets across the nation, especially in larger metros, do mix in Classic Rock, especially crossover artists. I was in Miami a few months ago, and The Eagles, John Cougar were right in the middle of it on KISS Country.

KZLA in LA is another outlet that has integrated the rock sound. For KZLA, it makes sense, as their only other option is to change formats and leave the format missing, as in NYC.
______________
