Strange FM signal skip....

I was driving home to FWB early this evening (5/18) around 6PM
flipped the dial to 104.7 which is WAAZ-FM Crestview for the CBS
News. After the news, came local wx, then about 8 or 9 past the hour,
the music changed as if someone was overriding the signal and I heard
The Bee Gees, "NIGHT FEVER", thought for a moment, has somebody
convinced Jimmy to flip formats? Kept listening while traveling south
on Lewis Turner Blvd from Eglin West Gate, but lost the signal about
10 minutes later, what was surprising to me was the jock after the
BG's ended ID'd the station as "70's at 7" on Tampa's Q104..104.7
in Crestview came back in as if their carrier/exciter had popped off the
air for those missing 10 minutes or so. Strangely enough, this was not
the first time I had picked up a distant FM signal, just two weeks ago
was driving home from Freeport on Hwy20 near Nicks and picked up
94.3 FM playing oldies, when the first song was over, the jock came on
with "This is Bobby Reno on WTIX-FM New Orleans..sounded just like TIX The AM Top 40 of the 60's/70's.

It's Q105, actually. Back in the 70s, they were a top40 station. For a number of years, they tried country, now they're playing the same top40 tracks of 30 years ago, except it's called oldies, now. Call sign is WRBQ and it is 100kW licensed to Tampa.

Tropospheric bending is pretty common across the gulf waters. I've picked up panhandle stations many times here in central Florida. More rarely, I've heard stations from Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and especially south Texas. Corpus Christi seems especially common. Occassionally, I've heard stuff from as far away as Monteray, Mexico while driving around town. Bending is most common in spring and fall, so this is currently high season for it.

I picked up some good stuff in Newberry today, especially from the Gulf Coast area. But also a few to my NE and SW.

WKSJ/Mobile

WYNR/Waycross and WHPT/Sarasota fighting it out.

WQGA/Brunswick

WILN/Panama City

WZHT/Troy, AL

WOKA/Douglas, GA

Spanish station on 107.3, not sure who it was.

WPFM/Panama City

we are hearing stations from as far away as Charleston, SC here in Jacksonville.

... All sorts of good stations tonight for the ones that broadcasted their call letters or I could locate them online:

90.7 WYFH
91.5 WKCL
92.3 WSGA
92.9 WIKX
94.3 WCMG
94.5 WBYZ
95.9 WIOP
99.7 WXST
100.9 WFMI
103.9 WTYB
105.5 WIFO
106.1 WFXH
106.5 WSYN
106.7 WOKA
106.9 WGZR

I picked up a lot more stations where I didn't listen for the ID at the top or bottom of the hour. All in all, I picked up 37 stations from 90.7 up that I normally wouldn't get. BTW, this was on the drive home tonight from 10 pm to 11 pm. I live just off Amelia Island for reference.

WSYN is actually WLFF from the Myrtle Beach area. A very good reception from Amelia Island. For the last couple of days Jacksonville has been blasting in here, even some of their smaller stations.

102.9 and 99.1 are in even on Walkmans, and 99.9 was strong. 100.9 is from the Hampton Roads area. A great reception.

From Charleston, I'm getting down to West Palm.

I heard an unknown station on 96.7 FM playing BBC on the SONY HD. Can anyone ID that? Gainesville was coming in, too. Amazing

Then I hope mr. 94.5 W2..whatever will get moving and vacate 94.5 as his signal will be un heard till the fall! and yet they are acting like a full powered FM station which they are not. Freedom 94.5 is a good concept but no one can hear it!

E skip on the 6 meter (50 mhz) ham band seem to start up yesterday with US stations working many Eastern EU and EU stations as well as Central and South America !!

Good Es into SC from Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa & South Dakota on Sunday.

While driving on I-26 East from Columbia SC to Savanah, I heard two stations from Wichita Falls, Kansas. It was 2pm on Sunday. Kinda cool....

what will the strobies have to think about this? If they could only talk (radio)....

sorry to ruin a perfectly legit and good thread here guys, but CCENG was being way to serious and official -like. Acting like he wears a badge or is the tropolice. (No gin, CCENG, promise.)

well Tibbs if you knew what you were typing, you would have noticed that we are not talking about tropo.....we are talking E-skip....apples and oranges.....you need a big tall Hendricks with some REAL European Tonic and a splash of Rose's sweetened lime juice (the way I make mine sans Hendricks since I have not been enlightened about that particular brand.....still using the old stand by.....Bombay)
