Strange formats in Houston

The imaging was terrible. Instead of saying "You 106 point 9," it was being pronounced as 'YOU'LL 106.9.

I don't remember Donna Mac being there on the smooth jazz period. However, she was on KHYS?KJOJ as Smooth FM 98.5 around 1996. Ted Carson was doing the morning shift, Donna was on in the afternoon and Col. St. James at night. I was doing weekends and fill-ins as Charles Calloway. I was still at KILT, four floors above using my real name.

No, during the You 106.9 period. May 1992. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB52okVPzfw

I think she made the transition to KLOL a couple of months later.

Like I stated, I don't remember it." However, you may be correct. The link you put up on You Tube states: 'This video is private. Sorry about that.'

I will ask her.

I asked Donna and she sent me this message through Facebook this morning:

No, I didn't. It goes like this:
Z-107, 86-92,
KLOL; 92-95,
New Texas Radio,
KHYS Smooth FM 96-97
KKRW The Arrow 97-2001,
KHJZ The Wave 2002 - 2008,
KHJK 103.7 2008-present.

Whew!

That is her history in Houston.

Somewhere on a tape, or maybe even a WAV I have Donna Mac doing an aircheck (not sure if it was live or recorded) for KHYS.

I have a Smooth FM Sampler She is on that tape with Ted Carson. KHYS Smooth FM.

I remember back in 2000/2001, I heard a Bruce Springsteen song on KIKK in regular rotation - "Hungry Heart." One of my favorite Bruce songs (go Jersey!)...but it didn't fit at all. That station died a slow, painful death that it really shouldn't have.

I still do not understand why The Eagle plays Billy Joel songs and Drift Away by Dobie Gray.

Old Chicago

My favorite was when KIKK-AM became KIKK-ASS Talk with Howard Stern in the morning, Dave Ramsy in the afternoon and the Comedy Radio Network filling the holes around various block programming that came and went.

Another strange format...when KQQK was jockless with a classic set of Drake jingles playing current Top 40 songs with Spanish promos and commercials in the late 70s/early 80s?

KQQK happened in 1986 with all the things you mentioned.. if they were jockless it was probably for a short period because when I began listening they already had jocks. Yes they were a strange format because they were a CHR format but the jocks were all latinos and spoke Spanglish. They also played the extended 12" versions of all the songs. AND on Saturday or Sunday nights (can't remember exactly.. was a long time ago) they had a 2 hour Metal show called Quieremos Rock and the jock on that show spoke all spanish. That was a strange format but lasted until about the beginning of 89 when they went Tejano.

Reminds me of a station out of Mexicali I used to listen to on the the drive between Phoenix and San Diego. They played English language top 40 with Jam Warp Factor jingles (and sweeps in English voiced by the same voice guy who did the Jam jingle demos). Spots and automated time/temp were in Spanish. The trainwreck segues kept me awake in the middle of nowhere on I-8.

"El Stereo Laser....Cah-Coo-Coo-Cah"!

The metal show was on Sunday nights. IIRC KLOL also had "Metal Shop" on Sunday nights.

Not sure about this but my cousin seems to remember a VERY short lived all Beatles format in the 80's.

I figured you guys would know....does not sound too bad I must admit.

I do remember when 93Q did a year by year deal. They would play songs only from '84 or '87 etc...

I think they did this right before 1990...it was cool to listen to. Everyday was a different year and they would add various news clips from whatever year they showcased.

Hey cowboybud. I found a tape not too long ago with KQQK jingles that I must have, put together way back when..

That's how they promoted it on air and in print back in 1982, although KBTL wasn't used in their "legal" ID's. The station didn't switch from KYST during that time and the call letters (which had replaced KTLW two years earlier) are still in use.

This is the kind of thing I miss... Radio coming up with something that's not the same old mundane crap day in and day out... Something to look forward to!

Honestly, I can't imagine any sane person (even one who likes classic rock) who could listen to the Eagle or Arrow stations for any length of time... I hardly ever listen, but when I do I STILL hear the same boring narrow minded play-list... AND Bon Jovi... blah..... ???
