Strange transmission on 89.3 FM

I was browsing the radio dial (as i always do) for something to listen to and I stopped at 89.3 FM and heard christmas music. The station ID'd itself as Collage Radio 89.3 FM. The signal was weak but audible. After every song there was A montage of kids saying happy holidays from somewhere but I couldn't understand it due to static. There was also a dj who went by the name of Eddie Rose who came on every few songs asking people to send in requests. I listened for about a half hour and then the dj came on saying that it was time to shut off the transmitter. He thanked everyone for listening to the program and said to stay tuned to the frequency because the program will be repeating sporadically. Then Elvis's song Blue Christmas was played and the transmitter went off soon after. I only recieved it because the local pirate on 89.3 in Billerica was off. Do you think this is a collage station recieved via troopo or a pirate station? I myself think it's a pirate because first off the audio wasn't that good and secondly the transmitter was shut off at 10:00 PM. What do you guys think? Has anyone else heard this?

Interesting catch - 99 percent of the time, if I'm hearing something on 89.3 it is WMSJ Freeport/Portland, ME - which might be doing the all-Christmas thing, but wouldn't be calling itself college radio and wouldn't be signing off.

It has to be a pirate the "we will be broadcasting the program sporadically" pretty much gives it away. Keep checking your radios especially at night since thats the time I heard the broadcast. Another way I can tell its a pirate is because there is no web presence what so ever. However there is an email address but he never gave it out on air he just said that people have been emailing in requests. If anyone heard, hears, or knows about this station please comment and if you have a recorder nearby record an aircheck.

89.3 is WTBU (Boston University), but it shouldn't be heard very far away from Comm Ave.

It can't be WTBU because they are part 15 and plus there isn't a DJ there by the name of Eddie Rose. I still think its a pirate because you can tell by the way the audio sounds. Keep a look out and see if any of you guys can catch the broadcast the next time it airs.

What about WUMD on 89.3 out of Dartmouth? They have a fairly big signal for a college station, albeit one that doesn't normally make it into Boston due to the pirates (and also 2nd adjacent and IBOC interference from WERS and WGBH)

It can't be that station because that station is on 24/7 and there is no one who works there named Eddie Rose. The audio quality of the station was too poor for it to be a college station. All I know is that the station ID's said "Your Listening to College Radio 89.3 FM." There wasn't any legal ID's at the top of the hour either.

I've heard a pirate called "College Radio" before, it didn't broadcast 24/7, however this was years ago and I do not remember what frequency it was on, it was somewhere on the noncomm band.

That must have been the station I heard. Maybe they came back or someone is relaying the Christmas program on 89.3 FM. The DJ who was on sounded like an older man. He did mention something about clips from years gone by if I remember correctly.

It's definitely a pirate station somewhere in the Boston west suburbs. I've heard it in Newton. It's an older sounding man who calls himself "Eddie Rose" and refers to the station as "College Radio" (but never mentions any specific college).

He's only on the air sporadically. I've heard it some evenings. He usually plays '50s/early '60s oldies or nostalgia pop standards, and sometimes old-time TV/radio clips. I haven't listened lately, but he sounds like the kind of guy who would play older Christmas music at this time of year.

Heading toward Boston from Newton, it fades out in Brighton.

During last nights show it was all requests (from what I understood) he even played a Hannah Montana Christmas song. I recieved it in Billerica, Ma. Maybe troopo had something to do with making the signal go all that way. I can barely get the major pirates like Hot 97 and I can only get Big City on a car radio. Either that or he is putting out some serious power. I doubt I will ever get to dx the signal again because there is already a pirate on 89.3 in Billerica. Luckily I was there on a weeknight when the pirate was off.

Maybe his location is farther north than Newton. I may have been hearing the south end of his signal coverage in Newton. Maybe he's somewhere north of Newton like maybe Waltham or Lexington, which would be a little closer to Billerica.

I don't know about his "all-requests" claim. That's probably phony, like claiming to be "college radio".

He mentioned an email but he didn't give it out over the air. He also had ID's with little kids saying Merry Christmas from some town but it was down in the noise so I couldn't make it out.

Does it? Comes in just fine in my driveway at the bottom of Market St.

Maybe he cranked up his power since I last checked it there a while ago. Could also explain why Chris was getting him in Billerica.

I've heard him periodically driving through the Newton area. For a while he was on most Saturday nights. I think he may be in the north side villages of Newton (Nonantum, Newtonville, Auburndale) rather than south, based on signal strength. The last time I heard Mr. Rose, he had an eerie echo on his microphone. He was doing a doo-wop style oldies show when I heard him.

Does anyone ever pull in 89.3-WAMH out of Amherst? They seem to put out a fairly strong signal to the East.
