Streaming fees claim Houston victim

Word is that KSBJ is going to discontinue it's web-streaming due to the high cost of royalty fees. Ostensibly, the non-comms are paying more than the commercial operations because they can't offset the cost with advertising revenue on the web page.

yyyyyyyeeeaaaaaaahhhhh....I'm going to say that money is not the problem here - in terms of cash flow. My guess is that coms and non-coms don't want to pay the ridiculous streaming royalties. Plus, the RIAA is pushing for that "performance" royalty...which is a big joke. They've butchered their own revenue generator, so they're trying to squeeze money from an already shattered industry...Just AWESOME forward thinking...

If the performance tax goes thru I suspect we'll see more stations cut streaming out of the budget as they will be paying extra royalties on their over the air (AM/FM) broadcast... and will have to fund that from somewhere.

here is a statement from the KSBJ website

Many radio stations are promising that if the performance tax is passed and becomes law they will just go off the air entirely - real radio and Internet streaming. Congress has this uncanny knack for destroying business while catering to special interests. I remember the luxury tax of the 1980s. Nobody bought luxury items and the luxury tax had to be repealed. So, now they want to do the same thing with radio. The music that I own by the artists who jumped on board all excited about it is already paid for. They won't get another nickel. I will now sit back and wait for them all to wail and whine that I am guilty of hatred.
