What's the 411 on Atlanta's new hip hop station? Who owns it? Can you even hear it? What is it sounding like? How long will it last?

:D YAY, ANOTHER HIP-HOP STATION ACTUALLY PLAYING NONSTOP HIP-HOP. 10,000 SONGS IN A ROW COMMERCIAL FREE. SOUNDS GREAT OVERE HERE IN LITHONIA. THEY'LL NEED MAJOR PROMOTIONS TO GET THE WORD OUT IF THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE SOME NOISE. THEY SOUND LIKE COMPETITION FOR HOT 107.9 AND V-103. 95.5 THE BEAT IS PLAYING MORE POP THESE DAYS.

Urban does so well in Atlanta that even signals like 102.9 would get listeners, especially with in-car listening. It'll be interesting to see what takes place on 97.9.

I don't get it? I'm not from ATL.... can someone explain?

Why is an HD2 station on another freq? I don't understand. And their stream isn't working.

Unless this is WCLK-HD2, it is a pirate. This could be a new student-run station at Clark Atlanta. This also could be a pirate overpowering W275BK (the translaters callsign).

A whois search of streets1029.com and wclk.com shows private registration for both, although with seperate registrars, which is not uncommon. However, the listen live links appear different. WCLK points to warpradio, while this 102.9 link features a "WWAV" callsign (which is on a radio station in Fort Walton Beach).

Again...fishy at best.

I ran the same WHOIS search and noticed that. They were thorough enough to register both 'streets1029.com' and 'streetz1029.com', which I didn't notice at first. They also has a following on Twitter:

Really interesting as to what's afoot on here.

THEY HAVE A TOP OF THE HOUR ID. I BELIEVE IT SAID WCLK-HD2 AND SOME OTHER LONG CALL LETTERS (W275DK I THINK). ANOTHER WEBSITE SAYS WWVA-FM HD-2, BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT I HEARDSOMETHING HD-2. I KNOW IT SAID DECATUR AS A CITY OF LISCENSE AFTER ONE OF THOSE CALL LETTERS. THE VOICEOVERS ARE HOT AND THE JAMZ ARE GREAT TOO.

I think its a Pirate or student station.. no way they can beat V and Hot,, and does The Beat even count as an Urban station,,, The beat is more COMP to Star and Q..... Why Cant Atlanta have a dance station or a True CHR,,,, the Urban niche is filled well with HOT being the best,, V being Heritage, and The Beat being the black station for White Boys...... If they have a stream, a good signal, and get some good jocks, they may force The Beat into a dance or true CHR,,, but I dont think they will touch the loyal fan base of Hot or V..........

That answers the question. It is a hip-hop station owned by Clark Atlanta University. Don't know about the student run part yet, but the odd paring with the jazz on WCLK seems weird.

I tired to listen to this station several times and couldn't. Twice I was on a parking deck looking out at the skyline and broadcast towers and still couldn't receive it. I heard V-103 at 102.9 and had to move the antenna and radio to find a weak signal from the translator. I can receive the translator at 97.9 in Gwinnett County with no problems (The Richland tower on Briarcliff Road is the best in Atlanta), but 102.9 is almost non-existant in Dekalb County and around the connector in Midtown on a portable radio.

I could hear the CLK translator on my 1980 GE "Great Awakening" clock radio with a line cord antenna at my house in Smyrna when I last checked a few days ago.

One must wonder how long this will last assuming it is CLK, unless the rules have changed, a translator can only repeat another carrier, not be it's own unique station with unique programming. hence why it is licensed as such. I am sure the folks at Infinity could squelch this quickly, especially if it takes anything away from V103 (which I doubt a class D with 170 watts is going to do going up against a powerhouse like V).

Will give it a listen when I get off work in Marietta here in a couple hours.

IT COMES IN CLEAR ON MY CLOCK RADIO IN LITHONIA(EAST DEKALB). A FRIEND IN BUFORD WAS GETTING ANOTHER STATION ON 102.9

The other station is WMJE Majic 102.9 out of Clarkesville (Gainesville)--mostly 1970s AM gold with some 1980s CHR. I get them both in the Duluth/Suwanee area.

Where I live, 102.9 is Majic 102-9, which isn't a strong signal. I moved the antenna on a radio that can receive signals from Greenville, Chattanooga and can receive signals such as WCLK and WWLG in north Gwinnett and couldn't find Streets 102.9. Only static or Majic 102-9. Suwannee is inside the distant listening area on the radio-locator maps. I think V-103 is the problem in the city. This is an extreme short spacing. I was near Decatur, when I tried to listen and found only V-103 and if I moved the antenna, I could hear a weak signal from this translator. Streets 102.9 doesn't have the signal strength to appear on a good quality mp3 player's radio or a small portable radio with-in so many miles of V-103's tower. It's a listen in the car signal. I've noticed V-103 on 102.9 in Duluth too; when I tried to listen to Majic 102-9 a few months ago. It won't have much impact on 103.3 or 107.9.
