Streetz 102-9 Correction, Rumors

Yesterday I posted that Radio One is reportedly suing the owners of Streetz 102-9. Now I hear they are not suing the station's owners but are suing former Radio One programmer Steve Hegwood, whom they believe has been consulting 102.9 behind the scenes.

Another rumor is that former Radio One/Atlanta GM Wayne Brown will become GM of Streetz 102-9. Just a rumor though.

If Radio One is suing, it sounds like a noncompete issue.

Who are the "owners" of this new station anyway? It sounds like several former Radio One people are behind this. Isn't there a former Radio One Atlanta employee that now owns a few stations in Macon? Could this person be responsible?

It does sound like a non-compete issue with Hegwood.

The FCC data base shows Radio Assist Ministry as the owner, whatever that is. Chris Murray is the former Radio One employee who owns WFXM-FM in Macon. He is not involved with 102.9.

I wouldn't be suprised if this station actually grew bigger than what it is, especially if Hegwood is really involved. The man knows the biz.

True, but it will be hard to grow with 170 watts farther down on the same tower as V-103 with 100,000 watts.

I know, that sucks Roddy. They actually play some hot tunes and the voiceovers are great. Do you think ATL could actually support a 3rd Urban (given a stronger signal)? V-103 has been comfortable in there spot for years and HOT 107.9 will never come near V's ratings period. Both stations seem relaxed where they are.

i will say a few things.

BEYONCE IS NOT STREET! Put a ring on it is THRU. Ne-Yo Why I Love Her IS NOT STREET! And i dont even know what song they was playing at 3:50am but it sounded like some kinda of reaggae track. I don't know ONE PERSON that would keep this station on claiming they are STREET while playing this kinda music. Its another Wild 967 overall.

Rotation needs to get tight or else listening to the station is over if they are doing what the other stations are already doing. Its time to bring it home for the A. Keep it live, keep it local. They need to be NICHE. They need to be DIFFERENT. 12-24 LIVE AND LOCAL, and keep it CRUNK if they even think they are even gonna make a dent in the market.

And its MOST important that they have a LOCAL morning show for the STREETS, COMMUNITIES. Worst thing for Radio One was to drop the A-Team. The thing i loved bout the morning show the most was how community oriented they were, specially talkin to the kids on Thursday mornings!

Radio is a powerful tool that can benefit a community, and with the right programming it can make a difference! Not just stupid entertainment gossip, prank phone calls and comedy, but real life issues that can be and should be addressed, which Black radio is really lacking on across the country right now.

A hard-hitting street team, showing off the van with the logo everywhere will build hype, and a easy way to promote the station. Events events events! Unfortunately Radio One has trashed 107.9 in mornings, but 102.9 seems to have such a limited signal its kinda sad. They could have some potential...

We'll see what happens. Only time will tell. I'd love to be the MD.

P.S.
I'd drop the Beyonce, Keisha, NeYo, and all the other girl tracks.
Add some Ace Hood, Lil Josh, Boss Playa, Plies, Playaz Circle, Hurricane Chris, Soulja Boy, GS Boyz, Drama, J-Money, UGK.. the list can go on and on.

Theres plenty of hot traxx that can identify with how the station is presenting themselves STREET / WE R HIP HOP. But they gotta stick to it. Time to do it right.... dont do what V103 and Hot are doing.

Obviously, you haven't been listening very long. They've been playing more hip-hop than HOT, V and THE BEAT combined. STREETZ 102.9 isn't even a week old so give them time to work things out before you start bashing. The playlist seems to be expanding day by day. I've heard all the new, top, local and even throwback hip-hop joints on STREETZ that others only play during certain timeslots or don't play at all (ex.THE BEAT). Thats what strikes me after hearing Hegwood maybe involved. The music playlist is very up to date and whoever is directing the music knows what they are doing. Those R&B joints you fuss about are played to keep the female listeners tuned in. What station do you know of that claims to be "Hip-Hop" and doesn't play some type of R&B. Too bad the signal is limited, but if Hegwood is running things they'll grow in a matter of time.

But how can they increase power? They are hemmed in on all sides from the blowtorch out of Columbus, the moderate signal from Gainseville, 102.5, and of course 103.3???

http://www.mstreet.net/pdheadlines.asp?phid=562740&PT=Today's+Top+Stories

Apparently, Hegwood and former Radio One Atlanta manager Wayne Brown are the "owners" of Streetz, leasing WWVA-HD2 from CC and W275BK from Extreme Media Group, which just purchased the 102.9 translator for $235,000? from the Radio Assist folk.

Thus the lawsuit. They are trying to compete with their former station Hot 107.9. They probably have had access to confidential market information during their tenure at Radio One...and they are using it against them.

Lesson to learn...don't fire good people...because they will try to hurt you in ways you might not think.

This is getting wild. Another source says Hegwood and Brown are still being paid by Radio One.

That would totally explain the lawsuit. The are competing while still under the contract, let alone a noncompete (assuming they are under a contract, which appears to be the case is Radio One is still paying them). Hegwood and Brown better try to settle, because they will lose any legal fight.

Now I hear that Wayne Brown is not still being paid by Radio One and has no non-compete. But Hegwood, who by the way was not fired by Radio One, does have a non-compete but is denying being involved with 102.9. But everyone thinks Hegwood is involved.

I won't deny Hedgwood's pedigree as an urban radio programmer, but his business acumen hasn't exactly lit the world on fire. Remember On Top Communications?

There is so much current / former Radio one involvement in this station it is pathetic. John Mathews, who is the current Radio One VP of Engineering built the facility. Steve Hegwood acquired the lease with the Board of Education to get on that tower, and Wayne Brown is the money. Perhaps Alfred Liggins should pay a little more attention to what is going on in the radio division, as opposed to playing with cable TV and syndication.....

The website is gone as well. Last time I checked, the streetz102.9 stuff was still playing on 105.7HD2. I wonder if someone's lawyer got to these people to ask them to stop?
