Streetz 96

nd2023

Banned
This pirate has been on for more than 2 years on 96.5 in Newark. It is strong enough in downtown Newark that WQXR 96.3 can't be heard well. How come there doesn't seem to be much outrage over Streetz 96 here as there is for Touch 106.1 in Boston? Streetz 96 runs commercials, and has its name plastered all over some events, and even has interviews with high profile artists. Streetz 96 must have made enough money in commercials to pay a $10000 FCC fine, their transmitter, and rent for a top floor in one of the high rises. Has the FCC ever done anything about them?

Its in Newark?Seems to be stronger in East Orange, near Central Ave(exit 145 GSP). Do you know its there for sure? Its on and off ,its not on most of the time, probably thats why....And who in the heck would lease a commercial on a station thats obviously not legal?

Dummies who don't know any better?

Come to think of it, would buying commercial time on a pirate be considered aiding and abetting a criminal activity? That might be a new angle.

Have you ever done anything about it besides posting on a message board? File a complaint with the FCC? Complain to WQXR? Complain to the NJBA?

The FCC is supposed to find pirates and shut them down...reading this board would help the FCC find them
I reported it online to the FCC months ago, and made sure to emphasize the interference to WQXR.
Next time I hear commercials on Streetz 96, I'll tell the business that they are advertising on an illegal station.

Having looked at the Streetz 96 website, and associated links ...
do you think the FCC wants to risk sending a Field Inspector in there ?

It's not worth dragging the National Guard out to shut them down.

I'm sure whatever advertisers they have "don't care" either.

Block your number if you make any calls.

Call the FCC local field office.

Of course if they had any intelligence, whoever runs the station would have it at 96.7 instead of 96.5. WCTZ is easier to deal with than WQXR.

Except, there is another pirate station at 96.7, and it's likely that the owner of the current 96.7 pirate would get in a fight with Streetz 96 if it was on 96.7. It's sad that we have two pirate stations interfering with each other.

From Jersey City I pick up pirates all the time. I found one over the weekend on 107.9 playing carribean music, and another on 99.9.

On a typical weekend, tune from 87.5 to 107.9 and count the number of pirate stations you hear. You'll run out of fingers and toes to count them because there are so many!

Question: how the heck do you make a pirate legal? While I think that they should be legal ... their efforts should be applauded despite their impingement on "classical" music or MOR ... get over it and throw them a bone d@mn it!

Listen, I'm going to go hear (pun intended) ... what I hear on pirate stations is far MORE than what I get with commercial radio. Granted the payola doesn't rotate as it should BUT it does give people WHAT THEY WANT ... and instead of "media" trying to CUT COSTS to continually line the pockets of the fattest cats they need to give the people what they want, need and are obviously now craving for because it's being snatched away from them! Thank you syndication et al.

Hot97, Power105, 107.5, 98.7 KissFM, Z-100 and a host of other commercial stations are GARBAGE ... STREETZ96, ROADBLOCK RADIO, ELITE, and others have brought a new, fresh and different flavor that ACTUALLY REACHES OUT TO THEIR TARGET AUDIENCE without the aide of automation but REAL PEOPLE, with real skills that commercial radio no longer has room for thanks to "cost cutting." The on-air personalities and DJs on these "pirate" stations are saying and doing real things still within the FCC's regulations mind you. They are connecting with the listeners on-air and at events. In the terms of urbanites the pirates are keeping it REAL! The downside obviously is sales as these stations have undermined commercial radio by far but you know what -->> MORE POWER TO THEM <<-- UNTIL YOU ALL CAN TELL ME HOW WE CAN CHANGE THE FACE OF THE CONGLOMERATE!

Granted ... "quality" and "professional" programming is NOT the "rule" on pirate stations (however, there are some GREAT commercial radio professionals that have switched over and offer a helluva good program these days) I applaud them for providing the best in listener-tailored entertainment ... NOT WHAT THE HE** MEDIA GIANTS SAY I NEED TO BUY OR HEAR!

GET OVER IT! It's bigger than you think.

Simple. Get a license like all the legitimate broadcasters did. You won't find any near the major metro areas though. Know why? Because they interfere with the stations that are already there.

There's a reason there's a licensing process. Without licensing, you wouldn't be able to hear anything at all with the blanket of RF that would be created. We tried that some 80 years ago. It was a disaster, and that was in the day when you had to be a big corporation to buy a transmitter. Today? Forget it.

Hey Tom, I read your reply to my posting in another thread about pirate radio stations and you're right. Complaining directly to the FCC will do little, if anything; it's complaining to the legitimate radio station that will get the FCC moving. But in terms of shutting them down is a matter of importance. No, it's not worth dragging the National Guard in, but if they're making a profit from advertising, who knows where the money is going? Are they paying taxes? Is the money being laundered for illegal purposes like drugs? Then something needs to be done. Maybe not the National Guard, but perhaps some federal or state authority like the IRS or state police.

And when it comes to the advertisers on the station, the federal government fined a number of companies across the country for hiring illegal aliens. The same should be done to the advertisers who knowingly patronize an illegal operation.

I'm sure there are a vast number of listeners of WQXR in the Newark area who are irritated at not being able to listen due to the interference by Streetz96. I think a MASS deluge of complaints to WQXR may work. Classical music stations are patronized by, for the most part, affluent people. Doctors, lawyers, upper-income professionals and the like. And their advertising reflects that: Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Cartier, Steinway, etc. Any threat to that demographic will definitely provoke action from some authority. The operators of Streetz96 may not get arrested, but seizing their equipment and fining the bejesus out of them will definitely thwart their illegal actions.

BTW, my wife is an avid listener of WQXR and even though we're not affected by the interference, luckily, we're still going to complain to them to get the ball rolling. There's force in numbers; we can shut them down.
