"Strictly Sinatra" - Should it be dropped?

I sort of think this show on WPLM Saturday Nights should be dropped. See, a few years ago, when Easy 99.1 first started, it was mostly a Standards station, with a lot of music from the 30s and 40s. Then they started adding more contemporary material. But they don't really play much of the really old stuff very much at all anymore. So I don't think "Strictly Sinatra" really fits their format anymore. And I think it MIGHT be better if they moved it to Sunday morning or so.

So, what do you think?

I think that if you don't like Sinatra you should change the station

Strictly Sinatra should be renamed Strictly ZZZZZZZZ..........why on earth would anyone want to listen to that format on a Saturday night?...........'PLM should think about moving it to another time and day, IMHO.

It's good to hear Frank somewhere. The show is legendary. Whoever wants to drop Strictly Sinatra should start their own program and see how long they last. Sheesh.

Frank covered many of the hits from the 60th the 70ths and 80th along with many other songs. The program should stay.

.......I think they should play a little more sinatra during the day.
I know I am not a radio expert, But their ratings seem to be going
the wrong way. The whole format is just horrible. I would rather listen
to KAAM in Dallas on-line than `PLM. Like the initials stand for:"WPLM-
We Play lousy music" (except for saturday and sunday nights).

I agree with Varulven, It's nice to hear Sintara on the radio. Personally, I liked WPLM MUCH better when you could hear some songs that Magic doesn't play. Some real classics. Now that sound just like every single other AC station with no original flavor of their own. I used to always listen when I knew I could hear a song that wasn't played anywhere else...now I don't tune in as much. I wish they would go back to the way they used to be. I loved them!

By the way did Mel Simons (the monthly trivia guest on Steve Leveille's WBZ show) kinda "borrow" that name
for one of the regular shows he does? Mel does shows at libraries, senior citizen groups, bar mitvahs, etc.
with titles like "The Golden Age of Radio", "Salute to Al Jolson", "The Golden Days of Rock and Roll",
and..."Strictly Sinatra" :)

from his site:
>>Strictly Sinatra, great songs of ol' Blue Eyes (video show)

as for WPLM I read somewhere that they were concerned WCRB was turning into an "adult contemporary
version of a classical station". (easy listening, something like that). Maybe they'll go all the way and we'll
hear easy favorites on WCRB....(jingle) "Easy ninety-niiiiiiiine.....point...fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive....." :)

btw doesn't Dick Robinson, of Conn. School of Broadcasting ads fame among other things, do a show
of that type of music late on Sunday nights on PLM?

I actually don't think that would be a bad idea. In fact, I think most of you folks may know that 99.5 actually WAS an easy listening station for a very long time. It was called WSSH 99.5. And I have to say that WPLM sort of reminds me of the old WSSH. Now, many of you may not agree with this, but I actually like the changes that WPLM has made. And they play a LOT of songs that Magic never plays. There are even some that I haven't heard in AGES. But somehow, I think that it's actually the individual DJs who pick the music they play. I don't think they test their music like most do.

But I think 2 other stations that WPLM should be competing with are WWLI in Providence, and even more, WQRC in Cape Cod.

I would bet that they can sell inventory on saturday night easily. That is the type of show people make sure they tune into. I bet it has a loyal following. What else would you put on there on a saturday night? Another syndicated oldies show?

Sinatra is a bit too old for my musical taste, but hey I have a bunch of shows on the weekend I must catch.. Beatle Years, Breakfast With The Beatles, Beatle Brunch, a few minutes of Elvis Only, a few minutes of the Lost 45's, and some irish music on WROL on Saturday and Sunday.

the show is a time-buy so as long as ron and wgbh can afford the rates and sell the time without much difficulty, wplm will keep running it.

frank's music is sort of evergreen. it can work across different demos. remember that whole lounge music fad among genXers and genYers a few years back? frank's music is like elvis or boston pops is part of american musical history. it will live forever.

It's a great show, plenty of sponsors, no reason to drop it.

WMJX is more of a typical major market AC station which is geared toward a somewhat younger audience than WPLM, and plays some more modern stuff. WPLM still plays more "gold" (soft oldies), keeps the tempo a little slower, and refrains from the major modern softer alt-rock hits and 70's disco hits that WMJX plays.

I doubt the WPLM DJ's pick their own songs during their regular programming. It's just not the same playlist as more typical AC's like WMJX.

Unfortunately, AC's no longer play Sinatra in their main formats for the same reason that Oldies stations no longer play 50's music, such as Elvis' heyday hits. The demo is considered too old.

There's still plenty of Sinatra sprinkled in on WJIB 740 AM though, and the excellent production values on his records sounds great in wideband AM stereo!

Easy 99.1 really does have a live person on overnights, at least most of the time. I called them up once, and the DJ answered.
