Strong signals from Eastern Europe and Russia

At 19:30 UTC today Nov 1 there has been a huge opening of strong signals from Eastern Europe and Russian regions coming in audible here in Newfoundland

Last night (11/1) around 8:45 CDT on 7920mhz, the Voice Of Russia was coming into Houston, Texas with a fair to good signal.

How was MW for you? Here in Virginia is was D-E-A-D. Not even able to pick up the blowtorches. That was around 9-10PM EST.

In the "Sandy" thread, I mentioned last night's MW stations. I should have added that I was able to get 870 WWL, in addition to 550 KTSA, 560 KLVI in Beaumont (that's next door) and I was getting a station on 590, but it was in Spanish. I was expecting KLBJ from Austin on that frequency. I never hung around long enough to get an ID. By the way I was using my Tecsun PL-660.

I discovered a very readable recording of KSL-1160 in Salt Lake City, from a guy in Norway. It looks like it was either Friday or Saturday, November 2 or 3.
Have to wait for the Reception Report, I guess.

I just wonder if AM 850 KICY in Nome, Alaska, would be possible in these situations, given their night pattern, and as we get to longer nighttimes.

Unless I'm reading their pattern wrong it looks like most of KICY's signal is directed towards Asia & Siberia. Of course that doesn't mean it couldn't be heard in Norway under the right conditions.

I understand 850 KICY Nome's nighttime signal is all pointed west, so they can aim Christian programming to Siberia and other parts of Asia. They even broadcast in Russian for that reason. .

You are correct. I suppose that only analog (slide rule dial) radios would work there, as digital readout frequencies would only be 846 and 855. I wonder, in the future, if they'd ever possibly change frequencies to a common-around-the-world US frequency like 540, 630, 720, etc. KOTZ in Kotzebue AK has 720 already, but maybe they can swap with KICY, and KICY make adjustments (power, antenna pattern).
