"Struble Says 2012 Was A Big Year For HD"

I won't donate to NPR until they shut off the hash. Picking up an AM HD station 5 miles across town would give Strubie reason to say it's been a big year.

So is that why we haven't heard from Bob Struble for nearly year? Because HD Radio has been such a success he's been too busy to write us? And all this time I thought it was because he was in the Cayman Islands drinking Mai Tai's with the guys from Solyndra.

"The FCC recognized Best Buy’s Insignia™ -Narrator Advanced HD Radio Receiver with the Chairman’s 2012 Award. The Narrator is the first HD Radio receiver specifically designed for the visually impaired."

Huh? I thought since radio was of itself an aural medium it was already ideally suited for the visually impaired. Once again, HD Radio dons a Florence Nightingale habit and shows us the way to a better future. Where's my Kleenex ™.

That's fine if you want to use your main channel to provide a service for the blind. Certainly in some markets, that's the only use for 1kw AMs. But what some stations are doing is putting their reading services (where volunteers read the day's newspapers) on HD channels.

I heard Kim Jong Un thinks 2012's been a pretty good year, too... ;) :D

Now that the Voice of Russia Radio has snagged a coveted HD-2 slot in Miami maybe the North Koreans can snap up a bunch of HD-2s and Kim Jong Un can do a Gangnam style format. Who says the North Koreans in their charming ill-fitting khaki outfits can't boogie?

Thanks to WQEW's finally losing IBOC I got the VOR on 1548 from Moldova the other night. Of course it was in Russian.
