STUDIOS AT 30 ROCKEFELLER PLAZZA

I am curious. NBC, MSNBC and CNBC and others are in the GE/RCA building
in New York. How many studios (TV) does NBC and their cable channels have in that building. How much of it comes out of Ft. Lee, NJ.

Old Chicago

All of CNBC comes out of Englewood Cliffs, NJ. MSNBC operates from two studios at 30 Rock, 3A (the big one) and 3K (smaller one down the hall that's home to Ed and Last Word). Some daytime hours of MSNBC (Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell, Hardball) come from DC.

NBC News has two main studios at 30 Rock, 3B (Brian Williams) and 1A, across the plaza (Today). Early Today, or whatever it's called these days, comes out of 3K. I'm pretty sure weekend Nightly News now comes from a very small green-screen studio on the sixth floor. I'm not sure what they're using for "Dateline" these days. It used to come out of 3B before it was renovated for Williams in 2011.

The newsroom for NBC and MSNBC is spread out on the third and fourth floors, and there are offices on upper floors for some of the MSNBC primetime shows. Most of the fifth floor is now filled with edit bays. The second floor (where WNBC radio used to be located) is now broadcast operations, home to NBC network master control and satellite operations. MSNBC's master control is across the river at Englewood Cliffs.

Only two NBC entertainment shows now come from 30 Rock, SNL upstairs in 8H and Jimmy Fallon in 6B. 6A, the former Letterman/Leno studio, is now used by Dr. Oz. ("30 Rock" itself is shot over in Queens at Silvercup Studios, though some exterior scenes are shot outside the real 30 Rock.)

WNBC's local news now comes from 3C, the former Nightly News studio. They also still have a studio on the seventh floor, 7E, adjacent to the newsroom.

Most of NBC Sports now comes from a new facility in Stamford, but Sunday Night Football still originates from New York, upstairs in 8G. The large set on 8G is also used by NBC News for some special events such as election night.

Former letterman/Leno studio? When did Leno do the tonight show in NY? And in Dave's old studio? What a slap in the face to Dave

I am sure he meant Conan not Leno for 6-A

Leno did do Tonight from 8-H at least once in the past 20 years. ( It was a New York week just after Letterman moved to CBS )

Thanks for all of the info! WOW!! Does NBC still have anything at Ft. Lee.
I think that is where CNBC actually started.

OLD CHICAGO

Wow!

What a history lesson. Good info, thanks Scott!

I always thought, that Letterman was from the old Ed Sullivan Studio

(I left NY in 1968..headed to Atlanta, GA where I am today. I use to work for WNEW-TV ch5..good old days when Metromedia under John Kluge was broadcasting fun

Did I say Leno in 6A? Yes, I definitely meant Conan, and 6A was the Letterman studio as well. When Carson was in New York, I think he'd used both 6A and 6B at times, but it was 6B that was most closely associated with his time in New York. After Carson left for Burbank, 6B was eventually renovated (with audience seating removed) and used for WNBC's local newscasts until the mid-2000s, when they moved upstairs to the new small 7E studio. When Letterman moved to CBS, he was (and still is) in the old Ed Sullivan theater at 1697 Broadway.

I believe Today had been in 3K before it moved down to the new 1A on the plaza. (There's also a teeny-tiny news booth on the second floor of 1A that was used by Keith Olbermann when MSNBC moved across from Secaucus to 30 Rock around 2007.)

The studio in Fort Lee, which was indeed an early CNBC location, later became home to Telemundo/WNJU, which was still there when last I drove by.

The Secaucus location where MSNBC began was extensively renovated after MSNBC moved to 30 Rock, and is now home to MLB Network.

Re: STUDIOS AT 30 ROCKEFELLER PLAZA

I think Jay Leno did a handful of "Tonight Shows" from New York during a sweeps some years back, but I thought massive studio 8-H was used for those shows.

Studio 8-H was home to the NBC Symphony of Toscanini during radio days (and "Voice Of Firestone" simulcasts from 1949 to 1954), NBC News Election Night broadcasts from 1936 through 2000, and was also used as the anchor studio for NBC's space coverage between 1965 and 1972, since full-sized mockups of Gemini capsules and later Apollo command and lunar modules could be fit-in.

Of course, 8-H is best known as the home of "Saturday Night Live".

A studio is just a space what else should they do with it? They were used for radio programs before TV.

CNBC moved in there in 1988 with equipment we brought back from the Seoul Olympics. I believe that they moved the local NBC Telemundo affiliate there.

That would be correct.

In 2006, I was lost in Fort Lee, New Jersey and passed by the NBC plant there while trying to get back to New York. I think it had NBC, CNBC and Telemundo logos on the sign out front.

I believe MSNBC first broadcast from Fort Lee before moving to Secaucus, too.

NBC is getting a tax break for moving "Tonight" from LA to New York. Anyone know where at 30 Rock the "new studio" will be, or are they renovating a current studio like 6B, where "Tonight" originated in the 50s.

Already answered.

Although I'm not sure going into the RCA-GE Building is the best move. They might be better off doing the Tonight Show in a theater again. Bigger audience and stage area. Better location. The Hudson Theater is used occasionally for conventions. Maybe it would be available for the Tonight Show to come home.

NBC runs Telemundo WNJU Channel 47 out of that building. The old MSNBC Studios in Secaucus are now the home of MLB Network.

When "Dr. Oz" vacates 6A for Jimmy Fallon, he'll move to ABC's Studio 23 at 320 West 66th Street (former home of "All My Children"), next to "The View" in Studio 24.
