I am curious about the less power/new Tower at 100.1 in Altoona. Would this be a move to prevent the signal from carrying into the other HOT areas like State College and J-Town where 100.1 did get a small showing in the books?

Its kind of ironic that the station would essentially downgrade since those who were there in the late 80's/early 90's would recall that once upon a time, the great quest was on for 25,000 watts and a tower in a spot that would turn the station into a powerhouse super-serving Altoona, State College & Johnstown. Of course the station never did get the kind of contour it was after and even when the signal was boosted a little, it was spotty in State College to say the least and never did hit Johnstown thanks to Q-94's repeater on 100.1 in Johnstown (is that still functional?)

What a difference a few years can me I guess. Very interesing.

The flip between 99.1 and 92.1 is to kill the Hot overlap. 100.1 is temporarily moving to the Forever tower and decreasing power so that 99.5 can go on the air in State College this week. Forever will apply to the FCC to move 100.1 back soon.

Guess it all runs full circle since J-town's CHR used to be on 92.1. I recally listening to the Friday Frolic on Power 92 in my high school days. It was stations like that and the likes of Sean McKay, Ed Sherlock and Pittsburgh's Quinn and Bananna that inspired me to get into this crazy biz in the first place.

99.5 moving to State College after all...that thing is gonna be a powerhouse. I would not expect any formal comments...but if I were a betting man, I'd guess we will soon be looking at Lite 99.5 and perhaps Sam, Jack or Bob 94.5??? Just a shot in the dark however.

At any rate, looks like the market is up for another shakeup pretty directly. Fasten your seat belts...its gonna get bumpy for eveyone. The piece of the advertising pie is already pretty slim these days.

It’s not too good for radio when you can buy a spot on Fox 8 for 15 bucks...
someday this radio market will realize the true enemy ...and realize there's a reason most Top 50 markets have only 1 CHR...if you choose to make a living off of trade and 5 dollar spots, God Bless ya.

They will kill the Hot overlap only to create a Rocky overlap.

Wow...whose doing that? Don't know what your rate card looks like but I can tell you that G101 rarely does any trade and our spots cost more than 5 bucks too. I know...I buy em myself at my other gig.

I feel quite comfortable in saying that having 2 CHR's in State College is not killing anyone's ability to generate sales. (Although it may keep us all more honest in that we cannot price gouge our clients to death) I'd say that the difficulty generating sales in general has more to do with the fact that the market is pretty saturated with radio stations period. State College is relatively small for the number of sticks we have out there these days. Then add in the fact that Fox 8 is 15 bucks like you say...well that does not make life easier.

Partially correct!
Teasers on Lite 94.5 tell of change to Lite 99.5

But for the other part...you have to actually think like a consultant.
Sam, Jack, Bob, whatever, would take away listeners from the other Forever stations. What format has been proven to take away no listeners from other stations in State College? Smooth Jazz from JRN...barter/cheap to run.

It's funny that 92.1 and 99.1 are swapping formats because this same thing happened back in July 2000. I remember when 99.1 QWK Rock became Power 99.1, and Power 92 became Rocky 92.1.

This would make 2 Hot 92's in Central PA with 92.1/WWKL/Harrisburg broadcasting rhythmic chr.

Forever will let them do that because they tried it once and it tanked. Smooth Jazz has the potential to take some listeners away from Lite, WOWY, and WPSU. Maybe some office listening from 3WZ. Certainly a niche format and from a sales standpoint, the audience will be a desirable, higher income demo. I wouldn't look for huge numbers though. 4 points? 3?
