Subcarrier & Part 15 Airchecks

Well, here's some more airchecks that may or may not be of interest. These types of stations are not all that commonly heard (or airchecked most likely) so I thought I would upload some of these MP3s and post them here.

Part 15:

I once was a regular part 15 broadcaster. I started my first some time around 1995 using FM wireless microphones. I did various formats with them including a health talk format back in 1997 or so. In 2003-2004 I invested in some more decent part 15 transmitters. I started my first AM in 2003 which ran a Top-40/Variety Hits format. Then I started an FM oldies format in 2004 when I bought a 10 year old Windows 95 Packard Bell computer. In December 2004 I had a sudden urge to sort of re create what was a heritage Hot AC/Top-40 station in Wausau, WI 107.9 WYCO which flipped to Classic Rock in March of that year. It went pretty well until my computer started acting up. The computer I ran it 24/7 with (the computer I am posting this message with) started to shut off with no announcement constantly and not turn back on. I would have to keep unplugging and plugging it back in in order to get it to turn back on, just to have it shut back off again. It still does it and it gets very annoying after awhile. I am currently saving up for a new computer, since this one is 6 years old and slow as a turtle anyway. So with that, no more regular part 15 broadcasting. The only time I am ever on the air is once a week with Powerline and an occational broadcast to get my oldies fix. I am almost sure I am my only listener, but who knows.

This past week (June 3rd) I was offered $20 bucks to mow the neighboors lawn. I needed $20 bucks to buy a filtered power supply for the FM transmitter because the one it came with causes a VERY VERY VERY VERY loud and annoying hum. I go and mow the neighboors lawn, and come back in to find that WJMK-104.3 Chicago flipped to Jack while I was out mowing the lawn. I turn on the radio in the middle of the first song and was devistated. So I went over to Radio Shack, bought a power supply, set up the 10 year old Packard Bell and went on the air. Now periodicly when I need my oldies fix, I'll just take matters into my own hands and play the music myself and maybe give some community information and weather, etc. Thats basically what the Part 15 aircheck is.

Subcarrier:

I heard about subcarriers back in the late 90s and had somewhat of an interest in hearing what they sound like. I finally got that chance a couple months back when I borrowed a radio with subcarrier reception abilities. The only station I could get on that radio was WGTD-91.1 (Kenosha) which does reading service for the blind on their subcarrier (area newspapers, books, magazines, etc)

Enjoy
