Subchannel College Football

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but KTVK has been giving us SEC college football each Saturday morning on channel 3.2, pre-empting regular ThisTV programming, and KNXV has been showing ACC college football on channel 15.2, pre-empting regular Live Well Network programming - and that's in addition to the three games on 15.1 as part of the regular ESPN on ABC coverage. True, they're not exactly marquee games (UL-Monroe v. Auburn and UConn v. Maryland) but IMO, the games are better than normal network programming. Having grown up in western NY, I was especially pleased to watch the U. Buffalo v. Georgia game two weeks ago on KTVK 3.2.

I noticed that last weekend as well Dave and meant to post but guess I forgot.

It would be nice if one of them carried the PAC-12 games although I guess anything is better than nothing. ;D

Unlikely, because of the PAC 12 Network...

And speaking of NCAA football and television.....who is the bright light at C(BS) who scheduled Alabama vs Arkansas? The game was over 5 minutes in and it is embarrassing everyone and everybody as it nears the end of the third quarter.

Couldn't Programmer Bright Light determine from last week's debacle that Arkansas isn't ready to play this year?

I wonder why games like this are scheduled because you just know the audience will have left very early on. I did.

Meanwhile, UL-Monroe, who embarrassed Arkansas last week, took Auburn to overtime in one of our subchannel games. That would have turned out to be a much better game for See-BS.

Which can't even get on DirecTV - the service that most sports bars have. Last I heard, they're not even close to an agreement.

The SEC games were on 3.1 last year, but not the full schedule, IIRC. Maybe 3 and 15 have the right idea and are using their .2 channels for something worthwhile - other than reruns and thinly-disguised infomercials. That leaves 3.1 and 15.1 for their normal fluff programming. Full-screen 16:9 480p is adequate for sports, but not the reduced-size 16:9 picture that both channels are running now..

Does the pac-12 network have an exclusive deal the the satellites and cable companies? If not there is no reason a sub channel couldn't preempt programming to air the games, unless there is an ncaa thing.

If the PAC-12 wanted to syndicate their games to OTA stations, they would have. They didn't, and probably won't.

RIght now, at least in Phoenix, if you want the PAC-12 network, you must be a Cox subsriber. Don't hold your breath waiting for the "birds" to work out a deal.

PAC-12 is on Dish as of last week. I'm not sure if it's on DirecTV (for a satellite service that prides itself as "a sports fan's dream"--and as you mentioned, has a near monopoly on TV service in almost every sports bar in town--they should be carrying it).

PAC-12 Network is carried on Cox and Dish, but NOT DirectTV.

I'm not enough of a footballaholic that I would subscribe to cable or sat just to get the P12 Network. I might consider subscribing to an OTA version if their prices were reasonable. Until then I will take whatever they want to show OTA or I'll get the games on *ahem* other services.

I didn't know that Dish worked out a deal. But Dish has a bad habit of pissing contests with providers. Right now they are in one with Big Ten Network. Not good for sports fans or bar owners. How long does the PAC-12/Dish contract last?

To get into bars, they MUST be with DirecTV. I'm not holding my breath waiting for it to happen.

Doesn't your TV allow you to expand the picture to full-screen 16:9? Because that's what I do. Yeah, it's not hi-def, but certainly more than watchable.
