Right. Some markets aired it on Sundays, as the Sunday
Tonight Show. As I'm sure you know this was discontinued
when Saturday Night Live debuted in 1975.

Not quite. NBC News aired a program in the mid- and late-1970s at 11.30 pm Eastern on Saturday nights once a month. There was some experimental programming in the 11.30 pm-1 am slot until NBC stayed the Saturday Night Live/Weekend format. During the 1974-75 season, Johnny Carson called for an end to the weekend repeat broadcast of his show. That's when NBC decided to created a 90-minute late-night variety show. Dick Ebersol hired a Canadian named Lorne Michaels to produce the show.(Saturday Night Live premiered on Oct 11, 1975.) <P ID="signature">______________
