Subliminal message on WPRO

Alright, I've been hearing this for months...maybe years. I'll hear it maybe once every week or two weeks.

It's a sound clip of about one second of Obama saying (forgive my misspelling) "Al salam a lakum" and it usually is aired as a commercial is fading out. I just heard it now when I put my radio on at 11:30pm.

Am I going crazy or is anyone else hearing this periodically?

You should record the station every time you listen. I would love to hear this. Who is operating the board at 11:30 at night? My guess is it's a board op who is screwing around. Unless it's background on an actual commercial. I don't know. They read this board. They will look into it if it's a concern.

I haven't heard it myself, but my guess is it's the expression "salaam alaikum" (sometimes spelled "as salaam alaikum"), which is Arabic for "peace be with you." It's a common greeting among Muslims.

I've got the solution.Put Micheal Savage and Jerry Doyle back on.I find it strange right before a major election WPRO cans two syndicated conservative leaning shows two moths before an election.Anyone else see something fishy about that.

It's not fishy at all. It's Rhode Island. Obama's going to win the popular vote by a 2 to 1 ratio over Romney. There's not as many conservative listeners here <holding back on personal political views...

WPRO suffered two major losses which will hurt ratings. Losing Michael Savage and losing "Coast To Coast." Not smart. Not good. If there were a perfect time for HJJ to make a comeback it is now.

Kenny, during 21 of 24 hours of the day, WPRO runs conservative talk. WPRO runs news during morning drive. That is the only non-conservative programming they run. While I admit to finding Savage highly entertaining, his views are far Right of the Republican mainstream. Remember, when Savage first started, he used the slogan, "To the Right of Rush and to the Left of God."

WHJJ is totally poised to make a lucrative comeback in the overnight hours! Gimme a break. Overnight listening isn't measured. I'd really question how much Coast to Coast was really contributing to the early hours of AM drive as well. WPRO's news department carries AM Drive, not an "awesome" overnight lead-in. I'd believe that there would be a drop in listenership with the loss of Savage, but not enough of a loss from 9pm-12am to really make a difference. Are there a lot of local advertisers out there buying late evenings only?

Overnights aren't about being lucrative. No station makes much money overnight. It's about drawing in listeners who will develop a habit of tuning in your station. This will make them more likely to listen to the station during other parts of the day too. The dayparts that matter more than Midnight to 6 AM.

"Coast to Coast" is the best overnight show in town. That's certainly not working against WHJJ. It's finally making people tune into a station that's been dead in the water for a long time. Years ago when HJJ was the number one News/talk station in town they aired the very popular overnight show "Talknet". That certainly did not hurt them. I remember it being one of the main reasons I tuned them in during other parts of the day too. Don't ever underestimate the power that one good program can have on a station. It can influence listeners to give the station a listen at other times of the day as well.

First you've got one great show, then the station may have two or three good shows. Before you know it, HJJ is back in the game and WPRO will be wondering what the hell happened.

HJJ would be smart to put SAVAGE up against Matt Allen

That sounds right. It just aired again at 11:16pm. As last night, as John Batchelor is fading out into commercials, you hear it.

I think it was Matt Allen/Maverick who made this drop early on in his presidency...they played it and mocked it for a night then that was about it.

John, it hasn't been a ratings boon so far....HJJ still treading water in the 1-1.2 range. CC has shown that they don't care about that signal and what they put on it. It's been so long since they were relevant that they would have to do something HUGE to garner any attention and even then, would have to steal listeners away from WPRO. It's not happening. Getting Rush away from PRO was supposed to be their big saving grace, they actually seem to be worse off after it. Savage & Coast to Coast, even if Savage goes head to head with Matt, isn't going to do anything. Everything they've done so far has not moved the needle.

This town is all screwed up. People pay more attention to habits than trying something new that they might like better. I tuned into ABC6 News last night and this morning. They've got such a good on air product. A very refreshing change from hearing about the Eyewitness news mobile newsroom 50 times every hour. Even Channel 10 is boring me lately. WLNE should be getting better ratings. They do just as good of a job as channel 10 and channel 12. But people stuck in their same stupid habits for 50 years result in nothing changing. My idea of WLNE having news anchors in bikinis seems less and less outrageous with every ratings book. At least it would shock the public into finally making the switch. HJJ needs to do something equally as original and outrageous to turn things around. Otherwise in 50 years they will end up like channel 6 too...... or even worse. ... WALE.

I don't think that's saying a whole heck of a lot! To me...."Coast to Coast" is the "best" overnight show by default. Take a good look at what else is out there.......(sound effect of crickets chirping......)

I'm probably out on a limb on this one.....and behind the times as well....but....I really miss the kind of overnight show that the WOR Network had for so many years with Joey Reynolds....a sort of easy-going general-interest type show with a cast of regular panelists who kinda felt like extended family.

As it stands now.....UFO's....or conservative political talk.....some choice.... :(

Of late I've been listening to Phil Hendrie on WSAR, or if the atmosphere is cooperation & the IBOC hash from the NYC adjacents is minimal, 650/WSM or 720/WGN.

Also, maybe P.C. was a major school in 1995 but not today. Nor are the Rams. This is New England where we don't care about college sports. We have the pros!

I'm surprised no one corrected me or just aren't paying attention. Micheal Savage is off the air literary. OFF TRN.Some sort of Law suit he won and is now looking for a new network

Yeah he said he will be off the air for some time. It struck me as funny that Winning a lawsuit means you get to stay off the radio. For all of those people without radio jobs you can just look at yourself as a Winner! LoL.

Here are the details.

This question is for anyone out there with an intimate knowledge of finances....and also an intimate knowledge of the economics of the business...

Just how much would it cost for someone to hang on to a radio station license (such as WALE)....while keeping the station silent?

I'm guessing there must be real estate taxes to be paid on the transmitter site....or at least lease/rent payments. I'm guessing there must be other expenses as well.

How much (if any) of the expenses could be written off as tax losses?

What incentive could there possibly be for Peter Arpin to hang on to the 990 license...other than that "pie in the sky" hope of some "greater fool" coming along to buy the place?
