Subs for Howie

...and I don't mean hoagies or grinders.

Today was Labor Day, so I shouldn't have been surprised when I tuned in for Howie and got Avi Nelson instead. In my (sometimes) humble opinion, Avi's OK in small doses, and I'm always relieved when it's him and not Col. Hunt, but it got me to thinking: Is that the best they can do?

Has former Carr gopher "VB" worn out his welcome at WRKO? At least VB has a sense of humor, something his current stand by's lack.

I'd even go with a "Best of Howie" on a one-day off situation. (That's be eight old half hours with Max Robbins. ;) )

96.9 FM Talk seems to go to greater lengths to plug holes when its local hosts are off, and none of them are syndicated. Howie's got affiliates, some of which (like WHYN Springfield) are nothing to sneeze at.

Are you satisfied with the status quo or are there other candidates you'd like to hear fill in?

I would have preferred Bob Hedlund, who has done fill in work before, but since he is running for re election right now that might preclude Entercom from calling him and exposing themselves to an equal time request from another candidate. The other reason keeping him from doing a Monday fill in is he does his own show on WATD on Mondays that starts right after the 6 PM news.

Bob is a Libertarian leaning Republican, and is a lot more interesting than either Avi, or Col. Hunt IMHO.
He can discuss just about any topic and keep it interesting.

Avi is old school talk radio, in the same genre of Benzaquin, Burns, Williams, Burns and Brudnoy. Unfortunately the days of intelligent talk radio are gone and Howie Carr passes for good radio.

VB did fill ins for Howie a couple times after he left for Fox 25 (he did a LOT of fill ins
before then) but more recently he has filled in for Jay Severin or Michele McPhee at
96.9. Michele is occasionally on Fox 25 and VB seems to have a slight connection to that
station.

Col Hunt--can't take his voice. I like Avi, a throwback to the old days.

Another frequent Howie fill in can no longer do it due to obvious reasons: Jeff Katz
now works for CC's WXKS. He admires Howie and is glad that Howie occasionally refers
to Rush Radio ("I was listening to a morning show on the new talk station"; "I was
listening to Rush")

Hedlund may have been on recently on RKO or TKK, forget when
