I'm just wondering what impact a substitute host has on the audience and ratings of a talk show. I listen to Howie Carr every day but I won't spend 5 minutes listening to his show if he isn't there. The host's personality is the most important part of a show...when it goes away the show does too.
 
sometimes if the regular host is off, I'll listen. See: Dennis and Callahan, although if Larry Johnson is involved, I won't listen. But there are some good fill-ins. On WBZ, Morgan White and Bradley Jay both do a great job.
 
Some shows are completely host driven (Savage, Howie) others are subject driven (Red Sox, M Obama's horrific remark). I doubt it hurts WBZ or WEEI much at all.
* By the way more and more of these guys get terrific vaca' packages: it's good to be King!
 
Avi isn't too bad filling in for Howie (tomorrow it's Bob Hedlund, though Avi will be back on Thu.); I don't
really like it when Col. Hunt fills in. But it still isn't the same as when Howie is there. He won't even let
Avi do a chumpline ("I flunked Chumpline") anymore.
Morgan also a good fill in.
 
When I listen to a talk show I listen for the host. SOMETIMES the replacement is as good (every once in a great while better!)

But that is only on local talk.

I have yet to hear a syndicated sub 10% as good as one he/she replaces.

I suspect job security is the driving issue.
 
I actually enjoyed listening to Avi Nelson on Monday.

Granted...he didn't have all the resources or interplay that Howie usually has. But AVI still knew the fine art of communicating with his listeners on the air! ;)

Too bad that there are a lot of broadcasters currently on the air....WHO DON'T! :eek:

I know lots of people who think Rush uses terrible guest hosts on purpose. They are almost all bad, even people l like like Walter Williams. Good writer but not good on the radio.

I've always liked Avi myself. Exceptionally well spoken and informed (whether you agree with him or not.)

I wonder why he isn't back with a full time gig. I know he originally bailed to pursue television ownership, but that must be well in the past.

Anyone know what he's doing that takes up his time and relegates him to fill-in work?
 
I liked Avi too, back in the day. Nowadays his show drags, no energy with too many current day references getting past him. Heard him all confused as to what a carnita was.

Avi probably doesn't spend a lot of time in Mexican restaurants sampling the pork menu. ;D
