Subtle WBEB changes

The playlist changes have already been pointed out, with the station trending a bit older and softer since the end of the Christmas season. Now it looks like WBEB has made some other subtle changes. A new tagline of "Relax and Unwind" is present (although I've still heard the "Music that Makes You Feel Good" slogan in imaging), plus a small change of calling themselves B101 again instead of B101.1

Interesting how they've taken the station older/lighter after the Breeze disappeared.

Since the topic of The Breeze has been resurrected: We all know they did dismally in the demo they were targeting, but that got me thinking about something. When The Breeze was around, I actually heard it a lot. It was usually a captive listening situation, such as riding in an Uber. But the thing that always surprised me was that the person who chose the station was young. I witnessed a lot of people in their 20's and 30's listening to The Breeze. Not at all helpful for management, since they had those demos covered already, but I do wonder whether the station got higher numbers in the younger demos than they did in the group they were actually aiming for.

If that's true, why didn't it show up in the Nielsens? Stations can see the actual demos, so they know.
If I remember correctly, they never really showed up in the 18-34 or 18-49's that AllAccess would give some info on. And I agree too, I did hear it a LOT in random places (stores without satellite fed music, friends cars etc.) but it never turned into advertising $$$.

Interesting how I've heard how WFEZ in Miami has been #1 in 18-34 many times. They HAVE trended more Mainstream AC than Soft AC, but still.

If B101 is gonna lean softer who’s to say I heart won’t flip 104.5 to mainstream ac and move Alt to hd-2
They've already tried attacking B101 with Mix 106 and then 106.1 the Breeze with minimal results.
Plus, for whatever reason, iHeart seems content with Alt on 104.5 regardless of how poor the billing is.

104.5 has been dead since the dropped the Radio 104.5 branding. Still better than no Alt at all tho.

Don’t forget Sunny 104.5. They tried to attack both B101 and Oldies 98.1 with that station 20 years ago. They only won once, in 2002 when Sunny 104.5 was the only station to go all Christmas in the entire market.

Nice to see that such a legendary station has fully restored their legendary branding.

B101.1 was fine though, it was at least much better than “101.1 ‘More’ FM.”

If they’re legendary, wouldn’t it be back to being WDVR? 😉
Of course, the WDVR calls have been on 89.7 in Sergentsville, Nj for over 30 years and would mean nothing to most of the 101.1 audience. I guess most of the doctors & dentists with the old WDVR giveaway radios are retired by now!

This evening, starting at 9:30pm, Sat. March 18, WBEB played...

Alanis Morrisette--Ironic
Avicii--Wake Me Up
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole--Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Boys II Men--I'll Make Love to You
Post Malone--Circles
Queen--Another Bites The Dust
Maroon 5--Girls Like You
Gloria Gaynor--I Will Survive
Harry Styles--As It Was
Earth, Wind & Fire--September
Alicia Keys--Empire State of Mind
Fun.--We Are Young
Cyndi Lauper--Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Gotye--Somebody That I Used to Know
N'Sync--Bye, Bye, Bye
Journey--Don't Stop Believing
Patrick Swayze--She's Like The WInd
Elton John & Dua Lipa--Cold Heart
Michael Jackson--Thriller

That's a pretty good playlist! Interesting that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is here. Even though Somewhere Over The Rainbow never charted, we all know this recording from numerous commercials and TV shows that used it.

There are also no current songs here. The Elton John-Dua Lipa duet was a hit last year. The oldest songs are September and I Will Survive, both from 1978.

Hmm.
  • In 25-54, B101 slipped to 6th place "with its lowest share since all the holiday hostilities began."
  • In 18-34, B101 got "its lowest score in over a year" to tie with two other stations for 2nd place.
  • In 18-49, B101 slipped to #5 "with its lowest score in over a year."
  • In 6+, B101 slipped 5.8 to 5.5 for 7th place.
It's only one book. But three appearances of the phrase "with its lowest score/share" doesn't sound great.

Yet in every case, the wobble is well within the margin of error of the survey.

Almost a decade ago, 101.1 rebranded to "More FM" when it was locally owned. Under the "More FM" branding, still, some 80's were played, but nearly the majority of the playlists is mostly 90's-current. Zero 70's.

Now, under B101 and Audacy ownership, more 80's are being heard, and they are slowing adding some '70s music, which should still be left out given some of the older audience has aged out. Leave the 70's to WOGL. Not to mention, Deliliah is back.

It's also worth mentioning that their sister station WMJX from Boston also has "Relax and Unwind" tagline like the B.

It is an oddity that WBEB is playing some 70s music (Gloria Gaynor, Earth Wind & Fire) while WOGL seems to be running away from 70s songs. I guess the difference is that WBEB goes right up to current and recent hits while WOGL only plays a handful of titles from the early 2000s. And WOGL is more rock-leaning, while WBEB plays some dance and pop songs that WOGL won't.

It used to be that people wouldn't tune in a station that plays music earlier than their high school years. Now it seems that rule is no longer true. In NYC, Classic Hits WCBS-FM leads in the 18-34 demo. In Los Angeles, KTWV, which has songs by Aretha, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye in its playlist, sometimes leads the 18-34 demo. And mentioned above, WBEB is currently tied for #2 in the 18-34 demo, even though it plays I Will Survive and September.

As It Was remains an AC current, and Post Malone might be in their recurrent category too.
