Sue Simmons: The Aftermath

Im just curious as someone outside the market (currently in TX) what everyones reaction has been to Sue Simmons flying off the handle the other evening on WNBC. I mean, is this a typical Sue reaction when something doesnt go her way or is this really due to "managment" changing hands at the NBC flagship?

This article from NY Newsday < http://www.newsday.com/services/new...y/news/ny-etsue145684952may14,0,1409428.story > claims a WNBC insider said Sue thought this promo was being pre-taped, not live. It mentions the fact that Chuck looks distracted (as he does, in the opening shot) which supports that argument.

An interactive poll on the NY Post's website (which I saw yesterday, but can't find today) was overwhelmingly against any punishment for Sue Simmons.

The Newsday article points out, since this gaffe happened after 10pm, WNBC can't be fined by the FCC because it was late enough at night to be considered within the "safe harbor" for indecency. Forgetting this at first, I was guessing any WNBC action against Simmons would probably depend on what action the FCC takes.

Still, whether this promo was being live or taped... she's been in TV for decades, and she makes at least $2.5 Million a year. You'd think she would know something about being careful on a hot set with live mics. Even if a promo is being pre-taped, all it takes is someone in production to accidentally send the wrong outtake to Master Control. Even though that kind of an error wouldn't be her fault directly, she'd still be the one looking bad on-air.

In the end, though, I don't think WNBC should fire her. But at the same time, they can't just do nothing. I don't think ANY station could just ignore someone dropping an F-bomb on the air. Maybe a quick suspension and that's that. She's 64 years old (or so I heard), there's no reason to fire her when she'll probably retire in another few years anyway.

Now, I'll close with noting this is the NY State TV board; there's a separate NY City TV board on this site.
They have a Simmons discussion going on here: http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,99535.0.html
