SUGGESTION FOR HY LIT RADIO

Dear Sam,

I know I am probably one of the last people you wish to hear from, and again I hope you can forgive my very stupid and unfair comment.

I have been listening to www.hylitradio.com and I have really been enjoying what I am hearing. I do have a suggestion for another type of station or show. (Maybe it is in "the works" now)

There is not enough "Bubble Gum Music" (I think that is the term) music on the radio anymore. I am talking about folks like...Bobby Sherman, Bobby Goldsboro, Barry Manilow, The Carpenters, Peter, Paul, & Mary...etc... Also not enough "one hit wonders" from that era.

Is this possible? or is there another station which still plays this type of music?

I also have a couple of names...

W HY B or WF HY L or WSN HY (or something like that)

Just a thought,

Stuart

You should try www.veronicafm.org in West Point, PA. They play all of that. I listen to them fairly regularly. Seems to be quite an extensive playlist from the 60s and 70s....certainly a lot more than WOGL.

The suggested station Veronica fm.org is most enjoyable! Thanks for the excellent post.

Thanks for the plug, Phil (?).

I run Veronica out of my house, along with two other stations. Using strategically placed transmitters around the neighborhood, it covers most of West Point fairly well. Most of my listeners, however, are obviously via the internet. The other two stations, by the way, are www.breezy1630.org (standards and traditional jazz) and www.exalt1700.org (Praise and Worship Music). They both operate similarly to what Dave McCrork is doing with WNAR-AM in Lansdale. Both of these transmitters are currently down while I do some reorganizing of the antenna/transmitter arrangement. I should have them back up over Labor Day weekend. The internet streams are still up, however. Soon I plan to launch a forth station, playing classical music. I'm pretty sure that I'll be running it on 1650. I am trying to hit neglected formats. The umbrella website for all of my operations is www.westpointcommunityradio.org .

Veronica, by the way, does indeed have a VERY extensive playlist. I am running about 2800 songs. Music gets rotated about 1-2 times a week to add variety and lessen burn out.

In any event, the music programmed on Veronica is a bit different from Hy Lit Radio (which I really admire and listen to). Sam does a great job with it. I think for the audience he is oriented to, the music on Hy Lit Radio is right on the money. Veronica is a bit more traditional 60s-70s oldies, with the key being playing a lot of music that gets ignored on stations like WOGL. My impression on the differences between Hy Lit Radio and Veronica is that Sam is targeting more of the old WIBBAGE crowd while I am targeting more of the old WFIL audience.

My biggest concern for all of this is the survival of operations like Sam's and mine because of the whole artist royalties issues. Sam's operation is commercial and has sources of income, while I am non-commercial. I fund the operation myself "with a little help from my friends". Either way, the current royalty issue could have dramatic effects on operations like Hy Lit Radio and Veronica-FM. It has me very concerned about the future of internet radio.

Hey Rene,

Can’t you throw that old BTA-50G behind that 1630 frequency offering so I can pick it up here in Gladwyne. C’mon, give me a little somthin’, somthin’, to drive around and DX, if for nothing more that the mere benefit of my own edification. And I know, you’ve got it in you.

Sam,

Alas, the 50G is long gone. I did, however, discover its fate just a few weeks ago. As I think I told you, it was sold to a company in the UK that was planning on using on a pirate radio ship. The man who got it was involved with several pirate operations over the years. Unfortunately, to save money they shipped over the Atlantic ON DECK of a ship, rather than in the hold to save money. Bad weather ensued, and it was scrapped when it arrived in the UK. Sad end.

Actually, I named it in remembrance of "Radio Veronica", which was the first European Offshore broadcaster in the 1960s.

Rene,
Of course, I remember. I just wanted to enjoy the fantasy, if ever so briefly.

Hey Sam,
Maybe Fred Moore still has the MW50 that he pulled out ot the building 2004? Would that suffice? More fantasy, I guess :)

I just tuned in to Radio Veronica...I Love it..As I also love Hy Lit Radio..One of the things Hy Lit Radio does well is cover the Philly Hits..Does Radio Veronica also have some Philly stuff like the Ethics..Billy Harner..Billy & The Essentials..Volcanos..Mad Lads?

We do play lots of Philly-oriented stuff. For instance, we program about 100 songs from the Cameo-Parkway catalog. But, that is not our emphasis.

Nobody does the Philly music like Hy Lit Radio, and that is as it should be. We tend to be a bit more "generic" in our approach, seeking to appeal to an international audience. From the beginning (about 18 months ago), the stats have shown that about 1/3 of Veronica's listeners are in Europe. I think this happened because of the name. We have even been written up in Holland. Therefore, I also have songs that were not big here, but were hot across the pond (particularly the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands). Examples of such songs: "Get Away" by Georgie Fame or "Puppet on a String" by Sandi Shaw. I guess I could say that Veronica's playlist is a mixture of US hits and UK hits, with the majority of the music being popular both here and there.
