Suggestions for Compressor before program Loop

Folks,

The AGC (CRL 400) before our program loop has died--not worth repair. I need to get something else. While the Aphex 320A would be a nice solution, the station can't afford the $.

I need a lower cost alternative. I'm looking at the dbx 166XL, which I've used for telephone hybrids but not before a STL. I'm also looking at the Aphex 240 (gate, easy-rider compression).

Any suggestions for other gear? Or is anyone using the dbx 166XL or Aphex 240 and can give an opinion?

The station is an AM talk station (some music on weekends).

Thanks!

If you only need one channel. $200. There is a line in/out for it. Set the density to the lowest setting and ride gain.

Symetrix 421 (mono)/422 (stereo) AGC units regularly pop up on eBay at good prices (usually under $200).

FMR audio makes a levelling amp that sounds great (link below). Its called the RNLA (Really Nice Levelling Amp). The price should be well under $500 for two of them. If you want something a little more aggressive, their RNC (Really Nice Compressor) is stereo and sounds more like a traditional, vca-type compressor. Both boxes sound incredible for the price.

I'm using TC Electronics C-300 compressors for this. 140 dollars each at Guitar Center. They sound great and have triband AGCs.

The outputs are quasi balanced though (ground sense unbalanced).

Folks--

This Board is great! Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice.

dtube1--I'm aware of the FMR boxes and they are nice. I'll take a look. By-the-way, I spoke to the designer a few months back and he told me that he's considering adding balanced outputs to the leveler.

LA_GUY--I didn't realize that TC Electronics was professional gear. I looked at the 300 once before. So, you're happy with the quality of the product?
Are the outputs "balanced" similar to the Delta 44 card?

Thanks again everyone!

Would a model 300 compellor be useful? I have one I bought from a member here a while back, If you'd like it, I can send it to you.

You can find the aphex 320A cheap, I got my Aphex 320A for $400 on ebay (shipping included). If you're risking the 2nd hand market why not go for the Aphex. As you said yourself, that's the way to go.
