Suggestions for Sports Headsets

Okay, it's that time of year again for college and high school football. I'm looking for suggestions for headsets. The station is currently using a Beyer 109. It works well but the gear that holds the boom strips and needs to be replaced often (they can't just loosen it; they must yank the boom while tightened).

I'm interested in some field reports. Which are you folks using? Pros and Cons? Looking for good performance, not necessarily looking for the cheapest. The ATs look interesting. Any good? Thank you all!

The Sennheiser HMDC26-600-B7 are still the preferred and industry standard, especially if your talent does Radio and TV PBP. A less expensive alternative is the Sennheiser HMD280, which has a nice sounding mic and headphones with good isolation in noisy environments. Most PBP/Color talent will always prefer the HMDC26, if given the choice.

I have had good luck with the HMD280, we got them specifically for the isolation aspect of the headphone. We are a fairly light user though with only about 3 on location type broadcasts a month.

All, thank you for the replies. It's interesting that the HMD280 and the Audio Technica have been mentioned. Both have been suggested by the station talent. Like I said, most of my experience has been with the Beyerdynamics, so I'm only vaguely familiar with the two. I've heard some negative comments on both that perhaps you could comment on.

First, the HMD280, the mic is rumored to be somewhat poor, not clean. As for the Audio Technica, I've heard that they are somewhat "light" and don't hold tightly against the head (can slide around) and are somewhat fragile. Thanks again for all comments

Hard to tell how good the HMD280 mic is- the quality is limited by the backhaul (often a POTS codec). I much prefer them to the Beyers though, primarily due to lower weight.

One suggestion: Buy the sets from a vendor with a liberal return policy. The talent may try a headset and decide they don't like the way it fits or sounds and paying for restocking or return shipping can eat away at the budget.

I've had some talent tell me the HMD280s fit too firm actually hurting that person's head a bit (no ego jokes - this did actually happen).
