Suggestions on compressor/limiter software?

Personally, I would never go the software route, but this is only my opinion.

If youo're looking around $200 - $300 you can probably find "decent" wideband processors, although I would think you'd have to go with software if you wanted multiband - I can't say I've ever seen a multiband box go on the cheap. I think a pair for Dorrough 310s (which will give you a ballsy 70's sound) will probably set you back around $500 for the pair. In fact, I've been trying to find some 310s on the cheap for a high school's on campus FM and AM stations.

that's my 2/100's of a dollar for ya.

Brown Nose some local engineers. you may luck into an old orban or CRL setup for the asking or at the most very cheap.

If you want to go the software route, there's a standalone version of Sound Solution 2 (which, despite it's detractors on these boards, does sound good when you know what you're doing with it) that costs around $60 last I checked. I don't have the exact link at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it's linked to from the Sound Solution site.

From what I recall Sound Solutions is also bundled with the StationPlaylist automation system. I played with it and it can sound pretty decent. There's a bunch of presets floating around for it. including 8100 emulation.

Depending on how hands-on you want to be, you need nothing more than a good tape deck to "push hard" and eq to your own satisfaction every piece of auido you intend to pre-record. Tape does a fine job of compression by itself if you are careful.

It is much easier to rely on limiters and compressors, but doing your best job of keeping all levels full to the brim removes the
pumping effect so common, which spawned multi-banders eqs, etc. Not nearly enough pre-production goes into taking audio
from the "source"to something that sounds good over radio.
Recording characteristics are, and have been, all over the map since the dawn of grooves in wax.
Your ear, a trusted reproducer, and your "headphone experience" should tell you whether the studio monitor
is telling you if your RF mod is doing its best representation of the audio present.

This is why the early days employed a guy who did nothing but air monitor and ride gain.
I have been running Zara now for 2 months on my part 15 AM 1620, and like the AGC, as long as my file is mostly high-level.
If the level is not full, the attack is too fast and the release too slow.
It gets confused by bass, naturally.
I am torn between listening without AGC and with. I really like the gain coming WAY up automatically in quiet sections,
and back down without clunkiness. In-home mega-mv listening sounds better without AGC on good recordings run to 0db.
Anything weaker wants the AGC to sound full enough.
I am considering an all-tube compressor with multiple gain circuits. I have a great 1948 text with several to choose from.
Others using Zara have complained of it muddying the sound. I find the sound crisp as ever, but the AGC needs some knobs
to adjust gain bands.

I haven't had the problem of Zara muddying my audio. But then, my transmitter is an SSTran AMT 3000 and I have it jumpered for 6db treble boost. It sounds amazing.

Thanks for some good ideas, everyone. Though I'm still not sure which approach I'll wind up taking, I'm probably going to wind up using hardware rather than software. Will keep you all advised as things progress.

Yep... there's all kinds of stuff out there for it. I contend, though, that it's best to grab a preset that's close to what you want then play with it until you get the exact sound you want. I've combined a few of my favorite presets with some of my own tweaks to put together a CHR-geared preset that puts two of my three local CHR stations to shame (not that that's saying much for those two stations).
