Suggestions on negotiating cable rates

I had the Charter TV/Internet/Phone bundle for a year and was paying like $130/month. Then recently they jacked it up to $199 saying the promotion was over.

I first called their promotions number to see if they could give me a good deal. I told him all I wanted was basic home phone (I barely use it but need it for the security system), Internet, and expanded basic cable. I don't need any movie or premium channels but like a couple channels like Fuel and Science Channel for which I need the digital tier. They guy tells me $169 is the best price. I kept asking if they had a better deal and he said if I sign a 2-year contract, I can get it for $144/month. I still thought that was too much. So I called back and hit the option to cancel service. They picked up right away and then they ended up giving me Phone/Internet/Digital Cable + 1 DVR for $122/month with no contract. I guess that's okay...still more than what I want to pay...but I don't know if I can push them for even a better deal. I personally think that most of the channels on cable are crap but it's that few that I really watch makes it so I have to keep the whole tier.

Anyone else try anything to negotiate their cable bills?

I've been playing the game with TWC for years. All I do is hit the cancel button, and they come back with decent terms.

The way cable systems operate and how desperate they are to keep customers, it's as if Monty Hall runs the cable companies -- they want to play "Let's Make A Deal" with the customers.
