Suits At WTKK Can't Be Happy About This

The latest Arbitrends for Boston are out (a little earlier than usual; most of the time other markets big and small tend to show up ahead of us) and to the limited extent that 12+ numbers in the early summer mean anything, the suits at WTKK could be lacing their Kool-Aid with something that's not good for you. I'll be a good boy and not use the actual number; but the digit to the left of the decimal point is one integer lower, and the digit to the right of same almost 50% lower! WRKO is holding steady, partially buttressed by ballplayers wearing crimson hosiery, but the tandem of Michael Graham and Michelle McPhee (sp?) is probably not a big drawing card for morning radio listeners. The beneficiary could be WBUR (except for the mid-morning BBC hour).

Hate to say ' I told you so' but Graham Crackers was bound to put TKK in the cellar and Michelle McPhee while an interesting print reporter still has a voice ...for print and not radio.
Bring Back Don Imus and "Imus In The Morning" along with Mike Barnicle.

Ratings will surge once Cap'n Howie moves to FM.

that's a wet dream prediction from a rabid fat-servant-hoo-hoo junkie. you have another month of billy graham to go who will proceed to squat whatever left of their amd numbers down the poop pipe. amd is way more competitive than pmd. it's a completely different ballgame. you have much stronger fm personalities to compete against in 25-54, listeners' station/show loyalties and trained morning drive drive habits to work around. to bring back the numbers to imus' level, they might be asking for a lot from a one-trick pony talk jockey. howie may get the numbers moving for a day or even a full book if he's lucky but he will have no impact on wtkk down the road.

wtkk should've waited out for cbs-i-mess settlement. i think their people made an emotional decision to sign howie to a fat deal. you don't do emotional deals in radio or any business. you'll always lose at the end. wtkk is effed. wrko with finneran looks like a bunch of geniuses. at least wrko can sign i-mess and move finneran to pmd.

You got that right. Graham and McPhee are tanking against basically no competition from WEEI and little from WRKO. I guess I see why they keep Graham around - bad as he is, at least he's a permanent fill-in, which they seem to need. But why McPhee?

Maybe not. Even your blogging pal is starting to hedge his bet, covering his tracks in case Howie tanks by explaining how he may be sunk by WTKK's other problems, which is odd since everyone, and everything, which was going to be in place when Howie switched is still going to be in place if Howie switches. Rather unbecoming, if you ask me. And if the Blogster has finally figured this out, you can bet that everyone else did about two months ago.

The Imus audience, and its gangbuster qualitatives and billing, is gone from WTKK, and gone for good, or at least for as long as Imus is gone, and maybe even if he comes back in a de-balled status. Imus was highbrow in sort of a lowbrow kind of way. Howie is lowbrow in a lowbrow kind of way. This is undoubtedly sinking in over at WTKK, and Greater Media is probably trying to find a way to discretely pay WRKO's legal fees in its fight with Carr.

It's kinda funny, especially after all the BS, that in a couple of months, 'coffee boy' Wolfe's counterparts at WTKK will be going into a meeting to explain how they flushed 1.5 mil down the toilet.

Who wudda thunk it?

TSB

from a revenue aspect, i can't see how turning their mornings into wrko-2 will mesh with the rest of the day's 'stimulating' talk? imus' buyers were able to reach a very specific audience which they sought and found on his show on 96.9. now, you're getting your building 19 crowd which you can pretty much get everywhere else with mich larger numbers on wbz, weei, wmjx, wxks, wror, etc. why would you want to buy howie who doesn't have any amd history of success?

he'll probably save gm some money on performance bonuses. he'll never hit top5 in 25-54's, that's for sure.

In the latest trend (25-54) WTKK (Barnicle then Graham in mornings) went 3.2-2.5. Finneran trails 1.9-1.7. In midday WTKK goes 3.5-2.6, WRKO goes 2.2-1.7.

Any thoughts ? Talk down in general? (Summer? moving to NPR? podcasts?) WTKK's losses are greater? WRKO mid-day loss greater than AMD because Feinburg's been bouncing around, covering for everyone?

Is Gene Burns right? Conservative talk on the decline?
