Summer Part 2

Re: About B 96

Question then since these are all excellent points JD. Why are B 96's numbers overall steadily declining? I don't get it. If their Middays and nights are doing well, and Roxanne is a Top 5 Afternoon drive DJ in Chicago, while Eddie and JoBo are Top 10 Mornings, I am curious where they are losing ground?

IMO, I don't think B 96 is your traditional Rhythmic CHR as they tend to pass on quite a bit of Popular Rhythmic/Hip-Hop artists. They missed the boat on both Mike Jones Still Tippin', Back Then (now added it as it is falling down the charts), and are about to drop the ball on Paul Wall Sittin Sidewayz before it gets huge. These two artist could be the top new hip-hop artists of the year and B 96 has react off of a hit instead of making one. It also made no sense why they added Kelly Clarkson well after she peaked for a span of about 2 weeks before dropping the song entirely from the playlist, and they have not even started playing Akon's new song yet which I thought Akon was an artist B 96 usually plays.

Off the subject: Your company does excellent work! I was not trying to criticize them. WXSS-FM in Milwaukee I know is produced by your company and the mixes are excellent with the Old Skool Mix at noon and the Traffic Jam at

You are absolutely right. S&R are riding high, especially after JJ on WKSC was let go. And B96 aims 18-24 for ad sales. So the older numbers are not much of an issue.<P ID="signature">______________

Sure, I could offer my opinion. Bear in mind, these are 12+ numbers, but take a peek at fellow rhythmic stations WPWX and WGCI's numbers as well. They're either flat or declining too. WKSC seems to have reached its peak earlier this season. WVIV (La Kalle) seems to have flattened out, despite being the new kid on the block. The stations that target younger audiences have lost listeners this trend. So where are they? Either the diaries have skewed older, or radio is losing these younger demos. Some may blame the iPod.

Meanwhile, WTMX, WLEY, WLUP, WUSN, WPPN, WKQX, WJMK, and even WKIE/WKIF/WDEK have either declined or remained relatively flat. The stations that gained in this trend are mostly targetting older audiences (WBBM-AM, WLS-AM, WRLL, and WIND-AM.) Note that the news/talk stations that have benefited from issues such as Hurricane Katrina. WRLL is benefiting from the loss of Oldies 104.3 and a billboard campaign targetting those former P1 listeners. Even WOJO is bouncing back to its usual numbers after an unusually low winter book.

I haven't peeked at the breakdowns of age, gender, etc. so I can't give you a full analysis. But the 12+ numbers seem to be missing the younger crowd.

I agree that B96 is not your traditional Rhythmic CHR. They are a heritage radio station tailored specifically to Chicago. I'm only a vendor for them, so I cannot give you a definitive reason why B96 plays certain tracks and not others. But playing the newest track first in the market is not necessarily the primary goal for any CHR station, including B96 or KISS-FM. You risk playing more stiffs than hits that way. Stations try to play the songs that resonate the most from their audience. Each station have their own way of programming and their own array of research tools and resources. There are many singles out there that do well on a national scale, but have barely any or no airplay in some large or even major markets. Even WKSC isn't playing certain mainstream tracks that are charting nationally. There are just too many variables to mention, but the goal is to program to your local market.

Thank you for the compliments. We're doing well providing the services that the stations want. For B96, it's producing a custom mixshow based on their playlist. For stations like WXSS 103.7 KISS-FM Milwaukee, it's producing hit music mixshows that stand out. And for other clients, it's providing services such as consulting, imaging, graphic design, or web development. I'm proud of what we've done so far, and it gets better as time goes by.

It would defeat the purpose of being Where Hip Hop Lives. If they had the dough, they would snatch up Mike Love & The Diz for wakeups. That would be a Hip-Hop morning show.
