Summer Ratings

What did you think of the summer ratings? Winners? Losers? Who's in trouble?

My sales manager shared some of the numbers with me this morning. I know we can't quote anything but 12+...

Observations:
1) KUZZ coming back to earth after Buck's death, and KCWR comes back down to its usual 1 share.
2) Spanish numbers continue to dominate Top 10.
3) Clear Channel Operations Manager should polish his resume and start saving for postage. EVERY station but 105.3 is either flat or down and the two he programs are way down...and one doesn't even show up (The VERY WIMPY 970)!!! That cluster is in deep trouble when the perennial powerhouses of KDFO is beaten by KBKO and KRAB isn't in the top 4 12+.
4) The battle of the AMs is promising this political season between KNZR and KERN (anyone notice how much promotion KERN is getting these days?) Can KGEO get any lower? Maybe they should go "Radio Store" 24/7?
5) Ummm ...hey AGM! To mis-quote Clara Peller...."WHERE'S THE BEAT?"
6) Sad to say...Hot has no competition. Nice Summer.

Can't quote em' here but heard there were some interesting stories in the specific targeted demos. Sure there are a few happy performers out there, and a few scratching their heads.

94.1 (for sure), 105.3, 99.3, 1560 AM did well.

98.5, 970 AM, 103.9 not so much.

The OM at CC is doing fine. FOX was down, but KRAB was okay. I don't know what demo they are most concerned about, but KBKO seemed to hold pretty solid.

While KGFM still has a distinct edge, it looks like Breeze is at least outperforming smooth jazz.

Why on earth did they change 970 a year ago? At least news was outperforming what they had now. I'm sure the PD at Kern wishes it were still a three-station race. What do you think they will change first 970 AM or Play 103.9?

Pirate is still not dead yet. It will be around for a long time.

DId anyone see the comments in "The Californian" today regarding the summer book? CC's Jim Bell sounds like a GM for a cluster that really bit it.

Quoting the article by Danielle Belton: "Nobody pays attention to summer ratings. Only people who pay attention are the one's who did really good," Bell said.
Traditionally, Bell said only the fall and spring ratings periods matter.
"The winter book and summer book are absolutely, totally meaningless," Bell said."

Wow. Bet that makes his staff feel like they can relax during the summer and winter and not have to work very hard.

WHY ON EARTH would you say anything like that to a newspaper reporter. It makes you sound like you lost, but you didn't care to play the game. No wonder morale in that building is so low. Your GM doesn't care what you do unless its in the Spring or Fall. Nice.

If anyone can kill morale quick, fast, and in a hurry its Jim Bell !!

Nothing like a good ol’ fashion pissing contest to make radio broadcasting look great to the advertisers and audience!

Addressing Mr. Bell’s comments: last time I checked, radio does matter to the listeners in the summer and winter, too; perhaps not to the agencies and buyers that apparently Mr. Bell only cares about.

We have to hope just the media people read those articles …

It wasn't until just recently that the Californian started doing articles on the ratings. I'm sure it has more to do with trying to show the newspaper's advertisers how volatile this radio market is than trying to cover the industry. "You don't want to buy radio Mr. Advertiser...just look how they treat each other!"

As for Mr. Bell and the CC crew...our staff saw the numbers in the money demos. There is no way Mr. King isn't crapping his pants at KBKO beating the once-untouchable KDFO. You've programmed that station into the ground Steve..it's a CLASSIC ROCK station. Play the hits doofus. You have NO COMPETITION! I won't even mention the 970 debacle. Who came up with that idea Mr. PD?

Smartest move? Simulcast KBKO and put them in the trucks and farm fields like KUZZ. But this is Mr. King we're talking about. He's not about to give a leg up to the country station. This is the guy who couldn't make a News Talk work with Rush, Dr. Laura and Glen Beck (even though KNZR seems to be doing JUST FINE with them).

My Top 5 Format Guesses for 970 (all easier to sell than what's currently on):
1. All Sound Effects. (Let's play "Name that Fart"!)
2. Meadows Field Airport Tower
3. All-KORN Nothing better than hearing the heavy hits in mono
4. All-Beach. Even though we're 2 hours away, someone may listen to "The Hot Hits of the 60s, 50s, 70s and 40s".
5. CC's Greatest Hits. Continuous Loop of Clear Channel's Greatest Programming Decisions in the last 3 years. Looking forward to "Killing AC Softly", "The Night 970 Died", "Oops I Flinched Again", and my personal fave..."Messing Up A Good Thing".

Starting from scratch yet again. I'm DAMN happy I'm not on your sales staff...I like my credibility in the market with my clients!

I could see them trying an all local talk format.....or maybe push for the female demo with something......Who knows with them.

Interesting... I would have guessed Christmas Classics through the end of the year (Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, etc.) and then Standards after that...
