SUMMER TRENDS...MAKE ME FEEL FINE

We all knew K-104 would be back on top, with the kiddies out of school...but up a full share?

And what's happening with Beat? They just keep sinking and sinking. Just a -0.1 dip this time, but they'll be out of the top 10 in 18 months if they don't watch it. KZPS loses a 10th of a point as well, with this being the first trend that completely covers the new format.

No other real surprises...read 'em and SLEEP:

K104, KDGE and KEGL seem to be the only stations that either dropped a bad month and had a decent month or in the case of KEGL it could be a good month being dropped and adding a subpar month. Other than that no real big changes. Looks like Lonestar may level to a 2.4-2.6 station....

What did KDGE do different? I know what KEGL did and we will see how it plays out in a few months.

KEGL dropped the month where Arbitron had "an Hispanic sample problem" and replaced it with a very, very bad month. That was ´preceeded by two lower "than the previous month" cycles, to take them to 17th 25-54. KLNO was hit in April, but with that month gone, it is now #4 25-54 and #8 12+ for the month of July and up significantly on the trend.

Before this becomes another mundane stroll down Arbitron Lane, the question is what's up with The Beat. The answer is Radio One.

One O' Fizz-o is on top because it's comfortable. KISS is getting a little too CHURB and less URBAN for folk, so they are drifting up the dial for the hard stuff. Radio One has a lengthy history of getting complacent with their stations. They pour their marketing mojo in a station until it basically peaks, then hold on to their precious ratings for dear life. Mary Catherine Sneed and Kathy Hughes know exactly what they are doing... renovate an old, run-down frequency and sell to the highest bidder. Yeah, little school kids, that would be your parents.

As for 104's success, it's an anomaly. They will always be there, but that jump? I blame it on homogenized artists and kids with no other place to go.

Mary Catherine has not been at Radio One for some time, and Alfred Liggins runs it.

Earlier this year the playlists on K104 and the BEAT were quite different. KBFB played harder hip hop, including some songs that weren't big national hits. This helped the BEAT win over the younger audience.

Since then there has been somewhat of a convergence. K104 plays more hip hop and KBFB has softened a little, even playing pop crossovers like "Until The End Of Time" by Justin Timberlake.

As the playlists became more similar, it worked to the advantage of the heritage station K104. It was overall a great book for Service as sister station KRNB posted it's highest ratings ever.

I am fully aware of that... you would be surprised, DE. There are people in this cybernetic domicile that may know as much as you. I may not be able to recall the astounding stats that you can, but I have few aforementioned folk on the speed dial and speak to said people enough to know who is still in the "advising" business.

And if someone gets on here to dispute that, I got pictures. But then again, that's largely why there were quotes around "Advising". You have two women that are tight and a boy that ruined the station with one fatal swipe of Steve Harvey.

Yeah, Radio One is the place to be. ::)
