Sun News Network to Launch April 18

Probably do great in Alberta but they shouldn't hold their breath waiting for great numbers in the GTA....

If Alberta is going to be their bread and butter, why hire faces known in Ontario?
Why not go all out to grab faces BEST known to Alberta?
That way, viewers there will follow over from where those people came from!

Most recently, SUN TV hired Alex Pierson, a former employee of Global Toronto, and once a co anchor for City News Toronto.

As of this writing (around 8:35am ET), Sun TV (CKXT-TV) is showing a countdown clock to the launch time at 5pm ET this afternoon...

Originally the clock said 5, but they later pushed it up to 4:30. There was a 30 minute preview of what to come (with plenty of eye candy) and then straight into Ezra Levant's show. THAT was painful to watch. I can barely read one of his columns in the paper before wanting to tear it up and throw it in the trash, his show was just as spiteful and mean spirited, in my opinion.

They changed it sometime in the afternoon...at noon ET, it was still counting down to 5pm, but by 3:35 ET when I checked it again they were counting down to 4:30. And is it just me or did (1) every other commercial break have a Liberal campaign ad and (2) anyone notice the glaring lack of a news bureau in Atlantic Canada? IMO I would think a station claiming to operate as a national news network would make the effort to have at least one news bureau on the East Coast, instead of just stopping at the TVA studios in Montreal ???

If Liberals in Canada are the same as those in the US -- so much for being "Fox News North".

Apparently, SNN only has bureaux in communities where there is a Quebecor media property, such as a TVA station or a Sun or Le Journal newspaper). Most of its properties are in Ontario and Quebec; I don't know if they have any properties in BC or Nova Scotia.

I believe they borrowed office space anywhere they already have a Sun Newspaper.
(Calgary, for example...)

They also have a fairly wide network of community papers in Western Canada, especially in Alberta. No properties that I can see in either BC (other than the Vancouver version of 24 Hours) or Atlantic Canada. The full list of their properties on the Web is at http://www.ottawasun.com/newspapers

I think they are restricting Sun TV to office spaces occupied by the SUN newspaper,
NOT other newspapers they own.
If that's true, this whole thing seems rather silly. They shouldn't leave out properties they already own under different newspaper names. It costs nothing to put a background banner up on the wall, if need be...

Two questions..

Is the Sun News Network available on cable as a basic channel, such as CBC News or Much Music? If so, have all the cable systems added it right away? Even in French-speaking communities?

And is the news and commentary slanted to the right, as is the case with Fox News Channel in the U.S.?

Sun News is actually a Category 2 specialty channel, meaning that carriage is optional. They originally petitioned the CRTC to be a Cat-1 channel, which commands mandatory carriage, but was denied.

The only places where Sun News is mandatory is in the GTA, London and Ottawa, where they are served by CKXT-TV, which carries Sun News over the air.

...which will continue until at least August 31, 2012. At that time, I'm guessing they'll try to have that extended, since that's their only "mandatory" coverage area.

Azumanga is right as far as Ottawa is concerned. It's basic cable and you can also get it over the air if you have an HDTV ho0ked up to an antenna.
