Sun TV transmitters approved

The CRTC has approved the addition of analog and digital transmitters for Sun TV (CKXT Toronto) in London and Ottawa. In London Sun TV will broadcast on Channel 26, DT 19, and in Ottawa, on Channel 54, DT 62. The full decision is at http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2007/db2007-352.htm.

My intervention against the application is summarized in the decision. Sun TV seemed to think that having a transmitter in London wouldn't prevent a new broadcaster from starting a station there, but I still maintain that since Channel 26 may be the last available allocation in London, it may be impossible from a technical standpoint for CTV or Global to ever establish its own station there. Not only that, but now there's another company to intervene against any new broadcasters there. True, someone could go the Niagara News TV route and seek a digital cable channel, but as it would not be OTA, it would not get favourable cable placement, and would only be available to digital subscribers.

Another blow to local TV in London. And Ottawa, where there's a similar story but at least they have three quasi-local broadcasters.

Feel free to think of this as you will:

"The licensee shall not solicit local advertising in Ottawa and London."

It's almost believable, since we (Ottawa) have global toronto and both omni stations from Toronto with local transmitters and I have yet to see a local commercial on any of them. One more tv channel for me. ;) I wonder if it will get carried on Cable. We do have one blank channel on the non-digital dial (67) so they'll probably put it there

It'll definitely get carried on cable, since stations available over-the-air not only have must-carry status for cable, but they must be carried at the bottom of the dial. I am expecting WDIV will get bumped off Cable 15 in London to make room for CKXT. In turn, WDIV could end up on Cable 20, thereby bumping WUAB into the upper tier of the dial. In Ottawa I would imagine one of the American stations, possibly WDIV on Cable 9, will also get bumped.

The Channel 62 DT signal is going to be temporary. Read in the CRTC notice..apparently the spectrum for DT is only 2-51. They are going to find a suitable replacement...

ONe thing is weird about Ottawa, that it has the most tv stations in Canada. A lot more than Toronto.

Toronto = 12
Ottawa = 15

I think that may be because of the quebec networks, since some of them are actually licensed to Gatineau, with only a river separating the 2. So we get the luxury of more channels. If I ever lost my cable service due to some interuption, 15 channels is not a bad number to chose from. There are a few places that don't even have that many with cable, although I'd never want to live there.
