The CRTC has approved the addition of analog and digital transmitters for Sun TV (CKXT Toronto) in London and Ottawa. In London Sun TV will broadcast on Channel 26, DT 19, and in Ottawa, on Channel 54, DT 62. The full decision is at http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2007/db2007-352.htm.
My intervention against the application is summarized in the decision. Sun TV seemed to think that having a transmitter in London wouldn't prevent a new broadcaster from starting a station there, but I still maintain that since Channel 26 may be the last available allocation in London, it may be impossible from a technical standpoint for CTV or Global to ever establish its own station there. Not only that, but now there's another company to intervene against any new broadcasters there. True, someone could go the Niagara News TV route and seek a digital cable channel, but as it would not be OTA, it would not get favourable cable placement, and would only be available to digital subscribers.
Another blow to local TV in London. And Ottawa, where there's a similar story but at least they have three quasi-local broadcasters.
