Sunday Night Football - ESPN

Just after reading that article from Yahoo! posted in the topic on ABC's last MNF broadcast. I was thinking where are the current Sunday Night Football announcers going? It didn't say they would say and broadcast MNF when it moves to ESPN in 2006.

Joe Theisman will be paired up with Al Michaels in the MNF booth. Suzi Kolber will continue to be a sideline reporter, along with Michelle Tafoya. Last I heard, Paul Maguire will be in-studio as part of the Monday Night Countdown crew.

No official word on what Mike Patrick will be doing but I have heard that he's a candidate for the play-by-play job on NBC's Sunday night game, paired up with John Madden (who's already signed with NBC effective after the Super Bowl). He also could stay with ESPN in some capacity.

For the life of me, I can't see why ABC/ESPN/Disney is putting Joe Theisman in the MNF seat. He's far and away (IMHO) the worst football announcer in the game today. Mike Patrick I can live with (although I loved it when Pat Summerall was filling in for him).

Re: Sunday Night Football - ESPN and NBC

NBC made an effort to land Al Michaels (had the Peacock network succeeded, he would have called NBC's Sunday-night NFL games and also would have become the lead play-by-play man for NBC's NHL telecasts as well), but he elected to stay with ESPN and ABC.

Certainly, Mike Patrick might end up going to NBC to do Sunday-night football games. Tom Hammond, who has done Notre Dame football for NBC over the last few years, is another possibility. I'd also add Sean McDonough (who did regional college football for ABC this year and called the World Series for CBS in 1992 and 1993) as another possibility.

A long-shot possibility is that NBC may decide to hire someone who has vast experience calling NFL football on local radio, but who has never done NFL games on national TV.

If I were to make odds on who would do NBC's Sunday-night NFL games, I'd have to consider Hammond the odds-on favorite at this point, with McDonough second and Patrick third.

It will be none of those three.

Hammond has already been informed by Dick Ebersol that he is no longer in the running for the job.

McDonough just inked an extension with ESPN after he was offered a deal to become the TV voice of the New York Mets on their new RSN.

Mike Patrick has a contract with ESPN and has publicly stated that he will remain with the network. Rumor at ESPN has it that Patrick and Paul McGwire will be the broadcast team for ESPN's Thursday-Saturday NFL package that they are close to coming to terms with the NFL on.

if al michaels didn't demand a private jet, he'd be the voice of
'sunday night football in america' next season.

none of these. mcdonough and patrick are contractually spoken for.
hammond was never an option.

nbc will name chris collinsworth their play-by-play man.

The voice of Sunday Night Football will be Marv Albert. He already has experience calling action for Westwood One. Has called NFL games on NBC in the past and has a long history with the Peacock network.

As for Patrick and McGwire I read in USA Today last week that they will become ESPN's new number 1 college football broadcast team next year, working the College Game Day premire 7:45 ET game.

Already announced: Collinsworth will be co-hosting "Football Night in America" with Bob Costas.

Do you have a link for that article? I checked the Sports on TV columns for the last couple of weeks (we archive USA Today at work) and I didn't find that mentioned. Someone who has been pretty reliable for me told me Patrick and McGwire were 100% on the new NFL package.

It would also be news to Ron Franklin, who has being the voice of the ESPN 7:45 game in his contract.

Re: Sunday Night Football - ESPN and NBC

I have always found it odd that ESPN doesn't have a halftime show during its NFL games like the ones on CBS and FOX. Chris Berman just sits there and shows highlights of other games with barely any kind of commentary on the game being shown. I think they should put Berman with Tom Jackson and Paul Maguire for the halftime show and then let Mike Patrick continue his duties with college basketball and possibly college football games.

But it looks as if Patrick and Maguire will be working college games:

No word on Ron Franklin's status. Maybe he is retiring.

yes, i know it was announced six months ago. but if you had read nyt article
three weeks ago, you'd have learned that collinsworth is being seriously
considered for the non-traditional play-by-play voice by ebersol,
something that newsday first reported back in june. the fact that he has
been meeting with nbc's game producers and doing practice runs in
the studio booth for the past few weeks may indicate nbc's six-month
search may come to an end pretty soon.
