Sunday, Sunday, Sunday announcer dies

LA Times reported today:

Jan C. Gabriel, a radio announcer whose voice was heard across the country in ads for drag-racing strips touting the action on "Sunday! Sunday!! SUNDAY!!," died Sunday at his home in Lombard, Ill., of complications from polycystic kidney disease, said his friend and business partner Denise Dorman.

He was 69.

If

Trying to remember...what drag strip did he announce in Northern California?.. Fremont Raceway, perhaps?

Where I grew up (LA), the big commercials were for Irwindale Raceway, and they were done in the same style, but they were voiced by Thom Beck, an LA news guy, and later member of the satirical "news" program - The Credibility Gap, along with Harry Shearer (The Simpsons) and Michael McKean

I loved those spots. What a cool mark on American culture!

Will Jan's funeral procession feature 64 FIRE-BREATHING, GROUND-POUNDING, FUNNY CARS?
