Sundown In The City

I was in Knoxville for the Easter Weekend and I noticed the "Sundown in the City" concert series started back up Thursday night. Which radio station is the sponsor for the series this year? I know that WOKI had been sponsoring it since it's inception, but with them now being EARL-FM, with no air personalities, it would be difficult for them to promote and host the show. Who is hosting it this year?

Hey, it's a small point, but in the interest of accuracy, please note that U-102 (occupied the 102.1 frequency) was the original sponsor.

I don't believe sundown in the city began until 2002, by then U102 was long gone. If it existed in a previous incarnation, then fine. But in its current form, Sundown was hatched in the minds of former River PD (now X top dog) Shane Cox and business owners in Market Square, along with the city of Knoxville.

That explains it. Sundown In The City did exist earlier. I returned to Knoxville a couple of years ago after a 17-year absence and assumed it had been continuous. I was PD at U102 for about four years ending in 1985 and Sundown began sometime in that period of the early 1980s. U102 was the radio participant at least until Republic/Jacor/Clear Channel bought the station (and I left). I was among the original list of organizers of Sundown In The City, although my contribution was minimal beyond U102's participation. Laurens Tullock is the person I remember as having the idea and putting together a group of energetic people to make it happen. It was a great idea and a hit from year one. - Bill Miller

Actually, I've heard promotions on Earl-FM for Sundown In The City. Earl-FM has these crazy liners between songs where it sounds like "Earl's" friends are calling him. One of those was a guy calling Earl saying he looked foreward to seeing him at Sundown In The City this year. Also, during Joe's all request lunch show, I've heard him talk about who Earl-FM is welcoming to Sundown In The City.

I haven't listened to 93 Point 1 in a while so I don't know what their promotions for Sundown sound like. BUT, it does get a little crazy. The first Sundown In The City this year featured the old band Little Feat???(Feet)??? it's been a long time and I really don't remember - ha ha. But WIMZ ran commercials for Sundown In The City that week and to hear them talk, you would think that WIMZ was sponsoring the thing. They said "WIMZ welcomes Little Feat to Sundown In The City." They were a pretty cool rock band back in the day - but the thing is - WIMZ was announcing the thing and they don't even play that band on their station. Since then, I haven't heard any more Sundown advertisements on WIMZ though.

Hey, do any of you remember the old Hot Summer Nights concert series we used to have here in Knoxville. Those were cool concerts - on the World's Fair lawn. I saw the Steve Miller Band there. Now those were some awesome concerts!

The only radio stations on site for Sundown were 93 POINT 1 and 90.3 the Rock....the first show this year was reportedly the biggest ever at around 13,000 people. If you go to the Sundown in the City website, you'll see the logos of the sponsoring radio stations.
