Sunny 102.3 Jacksonville, FL is now gone

According to the official Facebook page, Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting-owned Oldies/Classic Hits station "Sunny 102.3" (WSOL-HD2/W272CQ) has ceased broadcasting due to a lack of sufficient ad revenue. Here is the quote from the official Facebook page:

"102.3 has gone to the radio graveyard. I worked hard to sell enough advertisement to keep her alive, but to no avail."

However translators are in very high demand, so they should have no trouble selling it, and probably will make more money than they could ever have hoped to make from actually operating the station.

What is odd is that the owner is a group with about 8 other stations, including several in Jacksonville. I wonder if they will use the translator for another of their stations, like AM 600.

To clear up possible confusion, WSOL-HD2/W272CQ is owned by iHeartMedia. There must have been some kind of leasing arrangement with Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting to broadcast their Classic Hits "Sunny 102.3."

The Pandemic no doubt didn't help with advertising revenue but I believe at the heart of Sunny's issues was poor signal. When I lived in Jax, I tried checking them out on occasions as the music mix was pretty good, but at times it was hard to hear. I have to wonder if anything can be done to enhance the signal a bit.

Incorrect. W272CQ is owned by Chesapeake-Portsmouth. They are/were leasing WSOL-HD2 to feed the translator.

The clarification is much appreciated. Online research is not always clear between actual owner and who the owner is who feeds the translator. I should have gone to Radio-Locator in the first place. That site is chock full of lots of good info. Still, the question remains, what happens next?

no you shouldnt....radio-locator while pretty accurate is still on the whole, one of the more inaccurate site.

fccinfo.com is the best bet to find who owns a station.. its a service of a big dc law firm and pulls directly from fcc.gov data

For a translator, the signal is pretty good since it can be heard in Yulee to the North. That's quite a distance from their stick in Jacksonville, which appears to be at the old WAPE location on Hogan Road.
