Sunny 104.5 Sweepers/Jingles

I have noticed that Sunny 104.5 is still using its old jingles and sweepers while they're all-Christmas.
______________

Although I think seven weeks of all-Christmas music is overkill, any station that goes all-Christmas should have special Christmastime sweepers/jingles/imaging, etc.

Christmas music starting on November 4th is conclusive proof of complete creative bankruptcy.

I noticed that they've mixed the standard imaging with the old holiday stuff. I too wondered why.

Did anyone else notice that the playlist is extremely limited? I didn't hear "The Christmas Shoes" until today and I have yet to hear Aretha Franklin ("Winter Wonderland") or Barbra Streisand ("Jingle Bells") as well as tons of other stuff they've played over the past couple years.

Not to be argumentative ;-) ... I think it's actually a continuation of an experiment that turned out to be particularly profitable.

The very first song I heard this season was Saturday AM "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas"...so the playlist isn't TOO limited. Have they played Mel Blanc yet?

I don't think you quite understand what I mean. The song you mentioned has probably gotten at least 20 or 30 spins since they changed the format. They have a very small percentage of their usual holiday library in rotation and the songs they are playing are playing over and over.

No Mel Blanc, by the way. Plenty of spins for that Beach Boys song, plenty for Natalie Cole, plenty for Gloria Estefan, plenty for Anne Murray... but none for most of the songs I've heard them play over the past few Christmas seasons.

I don't know if they're rolling them out in batches or something but it seems like they'd want to sound as enticing as possible while they're the only all-Christmas game in town. If the business-owners are turned off by the repetition, everything goes to B101 again.

Re: Sweepers/Jingles...And why's the playlist so limited?

I do understand. Hippo used to be on the less-played novelty song list - unlike some of the others you heard every few hours. I probably heard it 2 or 3 times a season before. It would be a strange song for the "A" list! I haven't listened enough yet to pick out those missing often repeated songs from other years yet. Have you heard the Ray Conniff Singer type songs - they used to have a lot of them - Rudolph, Frosty, and their strange uptempo version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing that sounds a lot like Rudolph & Frosty! I like them because it reminds me of the Wannamaker's loght show soundtrack!

Usually, when they first start playing Christmas music, they have a lot of repetition to build cume. After a while, they broaden their playlist.
______________

Re: Sweepers/Jingles...And why's the playlist so limited?

I'm pretty sure there was one Ray Conniff Singers song in rotation. Oddly, the playlist opened up a little bit today. Still too much "Merry Christmas Darling" (The Carpenters) and "Christmas Through Your Eyes" (Gloria Estefan) but they added some of the other stuff today like...um...that song where the guy bumps into his high school girlfriend in the grocery store and they end up drinking a six pack in her car even though she's married. LOL. (Sounds very white-trash but it's an alright song actually.)

I can only assume that they're thinking some songs ("Jingle Bells" and "Winter Wonderland" for instance) are too Christmas-y to play in the first week of November? I dunno. Doesn't make much sense to me.

I'm gonna try the Sounds of the Season channel and see what's up with them. I love Christmas music but I need more variety than Sunny's offering right now.

Re: Sweepers/Jingles...And why's the playlist so limited?

I remember last year they repeated alot of the same songs, with different versions by various artists. As a matter of fact, I sent them an e-mail wondering where some of the non-secular standards were since I wasn't hearing them those first couple of days. Sure enough, they added them after a few days. I just wish the play list could be expanded...and not with hippopotamuses and killarney type things! Don't gag, but the Osmonds had a very successful Christmas LP with classics and catchy newbies, but I've never heard any of their songs on 104.5...occasionally they are on other stations during their Christmas Eve/Day programs.

Does satellite radio have a "seasonal" music station, by the way?
