Sunny 104.5

After the Christmas holiday is over and Sunny 104.5 is back to "regular" programming, can we expect to see any tweaks in the format? Will they still have the same 60s, 70s, & 80s slogan, with emphasis on the 70s tunes?

How do you feel about a station that plays just upbeat songs from the 60s, 70s, & 80s? I'm not talking about a rhythmic type of station, but just upbeat songs (aka no ballads). An example of some songs are "Footloose," "I Can See Clearly Now", "Sussudio"-Phil Collins, "Last Dance"- Donna Summer, "Your Smiling Face" - James Taylor, "Heard It Through the Grapevine" - Temptations, "Let's Groove" - Earth, Wind, & Fire, "Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" - BTO, "Sweet Dreams" - Eurythmics. Are there any stations that do this type of format? I guess this could be considered an "Upbeat AC" format, not a rhythmic AC. This type of station would not just incorporate rhythmic tunes, but some soft rock songs too.

It would be neat to see Sunny take on a format like this. They play the songs I've listed above, but they would need to eliminate the slow songs from their playlist. It would obviously involve adding more songs and digging deeper into the "upbeat music" library from the 60s through the 80s. The name Sunny seems so appropriate for this kind of format too since "Sunny" can be interpreted as bright & upbeat.

I would like them to evolve into playing more 80's Rock/Modern tunes, example: Berlin, Motels, ABC, Simple Minds, Culture Club, Bow Wow Wow (NO NOT THE RAPPER), PsycFurs, INXS, Thompson Twins, Men at Work, Clash, Blondie, Rough Trade, Fixx, Rainbow, and a splattering of the Bangles, Go-Go's, Martika, Vega and Jett.

You basically just described NYC's "Mix 102.7" (WNEW). Especially when the "Mix" format tweak was first unveiled, it sounded almost exactly what you describe. However since then, Mix has added more Disco and '80s/'90s Dance tunes, to try to compete with NYC's standby Dance-CHR station, 103.5 WKTU.

Magnum, I really liked your post about Sunny. You should copy/paste exactly how you explained your idea and email it to "Sunny feedback" on their website. Who knows?
Being in the biz, unfortunately, the word is Sunny's ratings are in the toilet but the fact it's so cheap to program is why they've been truckin' along. The only live talent they have is Jennifer Ryan in the mornings doing the traffic hits and the guy in the afternoon who does the pm drive traffic. Everything else is voicetracked.

Thanks. I'll send my idea to Sunny feedback and see what happens!

I always hear two different stories when it comes to voice tracking. On one side, it's so cheap, and on the other hand, I hear that many of the talents cost a lot more than what local talent would. for example, I have head that John Tesh on WSNI gets over $100,000 for what he is doing. What's the story?

Voice Tracking and buying a sattelite program such as Tesh is a little bit different. You can pay voice trackers next to nothing and you can get programs like Tesh on the cheap. I DOUBT HIGHLY he is getting a hundred grand. They would only pay him that if he was IN there doing a LIVE morning show. I would question the sanity of who you heard that from... OR if he is getting that I'd question the Sanity of the higher ups down at WSNI

I sent an email to Brian Check, PD of Sunny, describing exactly what I said here. Here's the response I got from Brian :

Thanks for the e-mail, Todd. I think you'll find that, after Christmas, Sunny is much closer to what you described than previously. Thanks for listening to Sunny and have a great Christmas!

Damn, too cool! I guess we'll listen and see...

Re: Sunny 104.5...Nerds Love it. Listeners, eh, not so much.

It's just too bad this radio station does not elicit this kind of passion from Philly listeners. Posters to this board obviously like it. Again, the number one reason why radio nerds are not permitted to program radio stations.
