Sunny 105.9 (2008) vs WOTS AM-1220 (1996)

Like many of you, I have been listening extensively to Sunny 105.9 since it's debut yesterday afternoon. Finally, a station that plays ALL the hits from the late 1960s through the end of the 1980s. Not just the music, but high-energy JOCKS making the magic happen between the records! CBS has a winner here. I can't wait to hear what this sounds like when the full airstaff is in place!

As I mentioned in a previous post, Orlando hasn't had a station like this since we did it 12 years ago on WOTS AM-1220. Curious for a direct comparison, I went digging through my old tapes and put together a short sample of the Wonderful Old Town Sound from back in those days.

This is by no means a "professional" aircheck. I produced it rather quickly and included a few of our sweepers. We had a weak signal and we had no budget. But we sure had fun with our little station located next to the big ferris wheel on Hwy 192!

Thanks for the flashback to when radio was fun.

As for Sunny, the verdict is still out on them. I can't get "Funky Cold Medina" out of my head.

Hopefully it will be off their playlist, along with a dozen other trainswrecks so far.
 
I agree they are playing a few tracks that they shouldn't, Tone Loc and Club Noveau come to mind. This is only my opinion. I like that they have played a few non top 40 hits that were still pretty popular in their day.
 
HOLY CRAP!!!!! Drew long time no hear... I am not a poster much on here, but Sunny really caught my attention also... I can't wait to see how everything falls into place... Other than a few songs that don't seem to fit yet is still fun to listen to I really like Sunny even if I am in IL!!! As for WOTS I really loved the format... It was a lot better than what you had to play at Star 104.7 in the QC... You guys were up tempo which really made AM feel like AM... Hope all is well with ya... 73 Carroll KT4SJ
 
I heard them play a remix of "Funky Cold Medina" & then they followed it with "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay". That's what "Jack" stations do, but at least they have personalities that deliver with high energy.

I would listen to you guys over in Melbourne in my car radio sometimes.
 
Hey Drew, you sound great. Great aircheck. Funny thing is, i was in Orlando, and i never knew the station even existed. And nothing radio wise gets past me, so it had to be a real secret. You need to send a tape to Mix's PD, he is running Sunny for now. Your the kind of Jock they are looking for. Let me take a guess, your the Drew from Windy Western Kansas. Send him a tape, it's alot warmer.
 
Thanks for the kind words on WOTS, y'all. I always believed we had more listeners than our Arbitron numbers (or lack thereof) indicated.

I've received a ton of hits on MySpace since posting the aircheck, so I'll leave it up for awhile longer.

As for sending a tape to Sunny, I'd *love* to do this format again...but I haven't done radio since 1999. I wonder if they'd take "previous in-format experience" in lieu of recent work history (?)

If this format works for CBS, I'd expect it to pop up quickly in other markets. Since 105.9 puts a city-grade signal into Ocala, I'm curious to see what adjustments Big Oldies 92.9 makes there.

Let's just hope it has staying power this time and doesn't become another "Greatest Hits of the Seventies", "Arrow", or "Jammin' Oldies" format-of-the-month.
