Sunny 105.9 Is Here! "Orlando's Greatest Hits"!

Did they wipe the dust off of some of the hits or what? ;D

I can't remember the last time I heard that cut from the Bee Gees on the radio.

i'm hooked now. i have been listening ever since it hit the air. it excelent. they have a great variety.

Guess the jock might be live since Mr. Berry just played a Beach Boys song "for Carol in Orlando"...

btw That song is "Kokomo". And based on how 80's-heavy Sunny is leaning, I wonder if in fact this is the only Beach Boys song on their playlist, but I digress...

> “Sunny 105.9 will be an exciting addition for radio listeners in Central Florida. There’s no other station like it in the market. Built for adults who enjoy great music centered in the 70’s with a high energy style, it’s going to be lots of fun”, said interim Program Director Jeff Cushman.

Indeed. There hasn't been a station like this in Orlando since we did it 12 years ago with WOTS-1220. Unfortunately, all we had was a 1,000 watt AM'er (and much less at night) from Kissimmee. Plus, no promotional budget. Nobody knew we were there. Given the fact that these folks have a full Class C FM stick in Orange City, I'm not expecting them to suffer a similar fate!

The potential here is huge. If done properly, this could indeed become the "CBS-FM" of Central Florida, enjoying mass appeal across a wide range of demos. The early signs are encouraging:

The opening musical montage was dead-on. First, EVERY song was placed in the correct year. This sounds like something you'd take for granted, but how many times have you heard jocks/sweepers give the WRONG year on Oldies/Classic Hits stations? To me, it's like nails on a chalkboard when I hear this.

Based on the previously-mentioned montage, Sunny will be covering the musical era of 1967-89. Again, dead-on. The years before '67 represent a different musical genre, as do the years after 1989. I was born in 1964 and began listening to radio when I was given a Lloyds AM pocket transistor for my 3rd birthday. The first song I remember hearing is "Penny Lane." This is perfect!

They came right out of the gate with JOCKS! What a concept: LIVE JOCKS on a radio station! So glad to see this basic yet all-important concept wasn't overlooked as it so often is in today's radio world. These guys are obviously having fun and enjoying themselves. That's what it's all about. Especially with Oldies & Classic Hits. What's between the records matters as much as the records themselves.

In short, a great launch for what promises to be an exceptional radio station. Congrats to Brian, Jeff, and everyone else involved. You did it...and you did it GOOD!

Drew

Good to hear BOB BARRY of the late BIG 100 back on the air! Great choice for PM Drive!!!

Newly-appointed CBS RADIO Vice President of Classic Hits Programming, Brian Thomas, is working closely with the station overseeing its launch and on-air presentation. Thomas also serves as Program Director of WCBS-FM, the legendary Classic Hits station in New York which returned to the market in July 2007.

Good name to have on board....I'm sure many of you remember him as the former PD of BJ-105, who was around when the station transitioned to WOMX in 89-90.

Wow... I can't believe how receptive everyone on this board is to something so "familiar". How can anyone say this music is something fresh and new to Orlando? You'd swear it's the second coming of Christ when it's merely a station that plays a lot of music that could already be heard elsewhere in Orlando.

Half of the music is already a staple on WMGF.
The other rock is already played on WMMO and WHTQ.
Any of the funk or older R&B is already played on WFCB.
The 80's hits can all be heard on MIX at various times.
So that leaves the Oldies...or does it? There have been FEW oldies played on Sunny so far and I doubt that will change. In any case...those few oldies were already being played on 810 WEUS AM.

What we have here is recycled merchandise in a new wrapper. Don't be fooled by the slick packaging.
Yes I miss O-Rock but I expected its demise given the poor ratings... but I really did expect and deserve something better than Sunny.

well, John...as the owner of over 15000 CD's, id expect you to be dissatisfied by anything put on the air! However...i think something to remember, is that whether you, or anyone else likes it or not...anyone who is currently involved with the programming of "classic hits" stations, (myself included), knows that the way this station sounds is EXACTLY what an "oldies" station should sound like...a GOOD mix of the best of the best from the sub-genres...along with a good top 40 sounding presentation...this station sounds awesome right now...and if the last 4 hours are any indication of what's to come...ill continue to be pretty excited...for one simple reason...

its nice to hear the "half the music from MGF", the "other rock from MMO and HTQ", the "funk or older r&b from CFB", the "80's hits from MIX", and the "oldies on EUS"...ON ONE POSITION ON THE DIAL, IN A GOOD PRESENTATION!...THATS why im excited...and i cant speak for everyone...but im sure SOMEONE would agree with me...

I thought Clear Channel had exclusive rights to the "Sunny" name ???

Overall, a curious niche format not really worth a full class C. heh.

By reading all the negative posts I can tell just how different a radio market this is from a market like NYC. Everyone was so excited whe WCBS-FM flipped from Jack to back to classic hits/oldies, even the mayor got involved. I like what WOCL has become and now I can listen to local radio again, instead of having to listen to CBS-FM online. Orlando needed personality radio and now we have it.

You make a very valid point that I can't argue with.

I thought the same thing a year or two ago when Renda launched "Sunny 94.1" in St. Augustine (excuse me, Fruit Cove), but I guess not.

I for one agree with you. I've been listening for about a half hour now online and like this station even though am not a fan of this kind of station format. It sounds great! When I heard it would be classic hits I thought it would be boring and yucky like that 97.1 The Drive station from Chicago - I HATE that station! But no, it also includes some oldies and 80s songs too plus it's upbeat and not boring and slow. This will indeed be a station I will listen to! Now they should just flip that dumb WMMO 98.9 in Orlando to modern AC (boring station) - then it'd be perfect, except make O-Rock 105.9 on an HD2 or HD3 channel - I loved that station.

BTW it kind of sounds like WISX My 106-1 in Philadelphia. But it's not rhythmic AC. It almost sounds like the old jammin' oldies format with the disco when they play it. Very good station and I'm sure lots of others besides the posters on this board will like it as well. Good move CBS! :)

Ok, there are many philosophies on the new Sunny 105.9, some negative and some positive. Of course, there's going to be negative feedback from those who loved O-Rock before. However, I've seen very LITTLE negative feedback from reading all the comments.

There is a lot that CBS had to think about. Take a look at the ratings from the previous 5 books. At one point, O-Rock was almost to WHOO status (not to knock the vintage HOO station here). It was obviously time for a change. Their strongest station was 102 JAMZ (WJHM-FM), with Mix and the previous O-Rock in lower numbers (and this is just based on 12+ persons). I don't recall what the demo's brought up, but it still came to about the same. In other demo's, I believe Mix was the other strong suit... but obviously not strong enough.

It's all about the demographics. What is dominant in an Orlando market? You have to look at ALL of those factors, and guess what? The new Sunny 105.9 hits those numbers... and the ones that make the most money, which is what helps their sales people sleep at night when they go home! It targets the fun adults who need a pick-me-up during the day, with hits that we all can remember. It's a great blend for every age, which means that the whole "family" can listen to it, whether in the car or at home. It's a constantly upbeat radio station that anyone can listen to, which is a good thing.

However... and a strong "however" here... a good thing only lasts so long, especially when it's constantly upbeat "happy" "sunny" music. Sure, it'll definitely bring in some numbers that'll skew the market... but for how long before the perky songs get burnt out? Keep in mind... it's still technically "Oldies". It's GOOD oldies, but once again, there's a burnout factor. If anything, it's an "At-Work" station that's good to have in the background. Unless they rotate their music very wisely, and remain "live", I give the station a couple of years before it hits its ultimate peak... then just lingers and falls like the rest.

Also, I'm not trying to sound like a PD or anything, but the jocks sound a bit too perky. I understand that the format requires it, and it's ok for talking up songs. However, there's a point where it almost borders "fake happy." They need to maintain the presence as if talking to a good friend without "shouting." Once again, it's just my opinion.

I'm not trying to come off as a hater (and I hope that I explained myself fairly well). I actually like the station, and am happy too that it's here in Orlando. It'll be interesting to see where it falls into the mix of Mix/Magic/WMMO radio, along with WCFB (Star 94.5). However, as far as Star is concerned, Joyner is solid in mornings for the African American audience. Afternoons? Who knows. With regards to the soft rock and roll fans, it'll balance out, and I believe WMMO will still be strong... especially with their downtown concerts.

I'll save this quote for when the station gets a 5 share.

Re: Impending death of another radio station

I'm sorry if this is negative, but while it may be nice to see a new format for 105.9, this means the end of WEUS as we know it. Look for more infomercials to start spreading throughout the day, (ever listen Sunday mornings?) and brokered shows to start airing, and then the eventual format change of 810AM to ? I know they will keep some listeners for now (I'll be one of them when I'm without my Sirius), but don't expect to see a 1.2 share starting with the spring book ever again for that station. :'(

Along as the new Sunny keeps playing titles like "Funky Cold Medina", WEUS can stick around for a while. Two very different sounding oldies stations. Give them something different on AM, and those upper demo folks may hang around for awhile.

I just noticed that too. Are they supposed to be classic hits or jack fm? Playing crap like that does wonders for a stations TSL.

"crap"? ya know, im not aware of your credientials, Frank, but imho, its that mindset that is responsible for the "oldies" stations as you know it, and the trouble so many of them are having...(sorry to single you out)...

what youre hearing is EXACTLY what this format has become...and what it should be...things evolve...listen...im 26, my kids will NEVER know who Bill Haley and the Comets are...my kids will never know who the Ronettes are, and ill be honest with you, they may never know who the Dave Clark 5, Guess Who, or Turtles are...but, bet your behind that they'll know who Rick James is...they will certainly know who Madonna is, and all of her 80's songs...and they will absolutely know who a-Ha, Huey Lewis, and others that youve heard on Sunny today...why? because i'm the same age that my mother was when she was exposing ME (as a child) to her "oldies"...bill haley, the ronettes, and DC5...she grew up listening to them...i grew up listening to some fairly newer music...thats where the format is...and its only going to get "worse", as im sure you will believe, or "better", as i see it...

how does this suit you...one day...the beatles, and their music will one day be 100 years old...do you think they will still have a place on radio at that time? and if you DO...i suppose youd like to hear a "Big Band" FM station on the air right now...

formats evolve...they change...and thats exciting!!!

Sunny, for now...is exciting!...
