Sunny 95 operator cuts UA a good deal on parkland
The operator of the Sunny 95 radio station is helping Upper Arlington residents have a sunny place to play.
The radio operator, Columbus Radio Group, agreed Monday to sell a 9.7-acre parcel to the city of Upper Arlington for $1.5 million. The purchase price is about $500,000 less than the land's appraised value, the city said Tuesday.
"We had multiple options to sell part of our property to different developers for significantly more money," Alan Goodman, president and general manager of Columbus Radio, said in a press release. "We decided to allow the existing green space to continue as such for the pleasure of the Upper Arlington community as well as our own employees."
The city considers the discounted price a gift, city officials said.
The city plans to turn the site into a park, known as Sunny 95 Park in honor of WSNY-FM. Upper Arlington expects to put soccer and lacrosse fields on the site. The site is adjacent to the existing Langston Park and is bounded by Kenny Road, Langston Drive and Windham Road.
The parkland currently holds three radio towers and green space. Columbus Radio retains a 3.7-acre parcel for its headquarters, the home of WSNY-FM, WODB-FM and WJZA/WJZK-FM. The company plans to relocate the three radio towers to a single tower at its headquarters, 4401 Carriage Hill Lane.
Columbus Radio is owned by Saga Communications Inc. (NYSE:SGA), a radio operator based in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.
