Sunny-Black Friday Thoughts

Yesterday we had relatives & friends in from the parent's generation (ages 70+) and had Sunny on. Everyone had to ask about it - "Is that your own music?... No...what station is that?...Andy Williams, Perry Como, Bing Crosby... 104.5...is that AM or FM?...I have to remember to put that on when I get home..."

I'm convinced no matter what advertising you do (saw Sunny 10 second spots during the Macy's parade for one) the best advertising still seems to be word of mouth or ear in this case, sampling it when someone else has it on. Most non-radio geeks don't scan & seek new stations, they go with what they know - even if not always happy with it, and stay. My in-laws haven't tuned their dial since WWDB left 96.5. I hear Sunny in stores like all over Peddler's Village, but most people just think it's canned music.

Heard an ad on Sunny at 9:55 am today for an early-bird Ikea sale ending at 10am! Watch out for those u-turns on Chemical Road! It's not all bad out there today - I was waited on by a teenager who answered my "thank you" with... no, not "no problem", but "you're welcome!!"...happy Black Friday!

Word of mouth

Last weekend I suggested to a friend that, since he drives more than one hour one-way to work five days a week, that he get satellite radio. He said, "Oh, I don't need anything fancy. Just KYW for traffic and B-101 for music. Although I don't like it that they went with all-holiday music so early."

That night, driving in my car, I had Sirius' The Big 80s on. He had to ask "What station is that?" When I told him, he responded in silence ... I could just hear the wheels turning in his head, "Hmm, maybe that satellite radio isn't so bad after all."

That is Word of Mouth marketing at work.
