Super Bowl Commentaries: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Meaningless numbers.

Let's be clear: They're meaningless to YOU. That's obvious by your post at the head of this thread. It could have been 123 million, or 123 people. Either way you were going to say the same thing and feel the same way. We all know and understand that.

But they're not meaningless numbers. Especially for the people who are interested, which is mostly everyone except you.

Even Univision, which did the Spanish language version of the broadcast, set a record. Their viewers think football is played with a round ball and a touchdown is called a goal. They care less about the game than you. Yet millions of them watched this game.

To put it in context, this is up there with the number of people who watched the moon landing in 1969. Yes, there were fewer people in the country then, so that was a larger percentage of the population. But it's still a lot of people. And they're not made up numbers. They are verifiable. Just as verifiable as the moon landing numbers.

But sure, you don't care. It's all meaningless to you.

Kansas City to have a parade for the Chiefs. And yes the rumors of Taylor Swift appearing in the parade are at play here.

I always watch The Super Bowl even when my team isn't in it the Detroit Lions which have never have played in The Super Bowl in it's 58 year history. I hope next year that will change and the Lions make it to the Super Bowl. Detroit and the whole state will lose themselves if the Lions win the Super Bowl a huge party in Detroit. And Detroit will be hosting the NFL Draft in late APR.

I hope she’s the grand marshal of the parade!

You missed my point....by a mile.

Unless the two teams involved were East Keokuk A&M versus Central Arkansas Flaming Jockstraps the number of viewers this year would almost always exceed the number of viewers in prior years. That is due almost entirely to the growth of potential viewers new to the country. This year there was another distraction which drew in numbers of female viewers and had very little to do with the game itself. As someone else mentioned prior the number also might be inflated due to the increased number of game sources this year. I'll add that Vegas itself contributed to the crowd size and TV audience and everyone should already understand why.

In my opinion this game had exactly ONE outstanding play; the SF flea-flicker. That is not worthy of two conference champions.

I don't bet sports and am not involved in making money off sports or the industry in general so yes, the numbers mean nothing to me. Nor do they to the two-thirds (majority) of the USA that doesn't bet, party or care about the NFL. IMHO the game was an exhibition of mistakes and boredom, the halftime show was a loser and even the vaunted commercials blew it this year. Neither team played up to their potential and even the announcers were sub-par; one was so irritating I actually turned off the sound for most of the 2nd half. I'm talking about you Romo. Don't come to your next game with tonsillitis and quit talking over your partner.

For years I passed on watching the SB because it tended to be too much BS and not enough quality game. I'm sorry for wasting last Sunday this year and doubt I'll ever watch it again - even if the Niners are playing. If your opinion and plans differ - you do you. Doesn't bother me a bit.

What your theory ignores is that viewership had been down for a few years. In 2020, it fell to about 100 million. It reached a peak in 2016, then it dropped. So no, it doesn't just grow every year.

Super Bowl Ratings History (1967-present)

But your posts in this thread aren't just about the audience, but the disdain for the attention it gets. As I said, thats understandable. But irrelevant. People don't watch for the game. It's a social event like watching the 4th of July fireworks.

..- the halftime show was a loser and even the vaunted commercials blew it this year.
I really disagree. The halftime was, in my own "as-old-as-you-are" opinion, the best I have seen at that game. The dancing and staging were sensational, the variety of big artists joining the show, the surprise of the roller skating and the huge-ness of the songs they sang were such that I could not take my eyes off the screen for a second!

As usual, some of the commercials were creative-as-heck, some missed hitting the mark with me and some were just there to sell a product. A couple were for new media / new business areas that I don't fully understand, but I'll bet that their target viewers got it totally.

Her next gig is Friday in Budapest

Not even close to true. I don't watch the SB, but many many of my friends on Facebook do, so i hear anbd read about it after the fact and see opinions pro and for.

Generally speaking, there is some who werent into it, but many many who were.

Plus, if you didnt watch the game, how did you know the half time show wasnt good.. from your echo chamber of friends?

Generally speaking, the half time shows have been hit it out of the park and alot of people love them

I wonder if the game helped Paramount's bottom line? Their ads were expensive and maybe helped with their debt situation.

Not a Spanish-speaking country, but one that is obsessed with "round ball" football -- Brazil -- will be getting an NFL regular season game next year. Video was shown during the CBS broadcast of a group of fans gathered in Rio to watch the Super Bowl, wearing the colors of the Chiefs, 49ers and other teams. No way of telling if any or most were American expats, or if Brazil is truly warming to the American gridiron game.
Of course, little can be inferred from a very small sampling that that Rio gathering represented, but I'd be surprised if the crowd for next season's game in Rio isn't mostly Americans who are either expats, tourists or workers doing business in Brazil. This is the first I've heard of ANY interest in the NFL in Brazil, whereas the league has legitimately grown a following in England and Germany, both of which are also getting regular season games next season.

Read again "Unless the two teams involved were East Keokuk A&M versus Central Arkansas Flaming Jockstraps the number of viewers this year would almost always exceed the number of viewers in prior years."

And, I do not "disdain" the audience. In fact, I don't recall mentioning them at all. It matters not to me who or how many people watch a given program or live sports show. Given the shortcomings I've already mentioned though I would have expected a much better presentation.

As for a "sports" program where fans pay little attention to the game being played you need only to look at the coverage given the WM golf tournament here in Snottsdale.

I do not "disdain" the audience.

The numbers that you say are meaningless correspond to people in the audience.

The program attracted the largest audience in history for something you call stupid. What does that say about the audience?

I suspect the audience at home is behaving differently from those at the venue.
