Super Bowl TV History

I'm looking for a list of the TV networks that aired the past 39 Super Bowls. And if the play-by-play crews for each game are also available, that would even be better. Thanks.

So Super Bowl I was shown on both CBS and NBC? That's really interesting.

Yes. Despite that, no full tape of that game exists. Sad, but true.
______________

Re: Super Bowl dates?

Super Bowl XXXVI was in New Orleans on the first Sunday of Febrauary 2002 (New England beat Saint Louis). The rest of the season was pushed back by a week due to the 9/11 attacks. All the games scheduled for either 9/16/2001 or 9/17/2001 were played as week 17 at the beginning of 2002. Super Bowl XXXVII (Tampa beat Oakland) was in January of 2003. From 2004 forward, every Bowl will now be on the first Sunday of February. The reason is so that the network who airs the game gets those ratings during the Sweeps period (February, May and November are big Sweeps months).
______________

NBC had the AFL games and CBS broadcast NFL action. Because both leagues were on the same field for the first time Pete Rozelle allowed each network to provide announcers. CBS controlled the broadcast; the NBC booth was at the mercy of however CBS wanted to do things.

They had to kick off the second half twice. NBC affiliates hadn't gotten out of their break yet so they missed the kick.

NBC got two in a row? I don't recall a network having such fortune.

And two years ago we lucked out by not having Dennis Miller. he was released by ABC after two years. Had he stuck around for a third he'd have done the SB when ABC's turn in the rotation came up.

The NY Times web site on Sunday had its front page from Jan. 15, 1967 - the date of the first Super Bowl (need I mention: Packers 35, Chiefs 10). I think the earliest a Supe was ever played was Jan. 11 or 12.

According to the Wikipedia article, the NFL had signed a four-year contract. Each of the three networks covering the NFL got one game, and the fourth was put up for bid, with NBC winning.

Which makes up, I think, for the fact that of the four AFL-NFL Super Bowls, CBS got three, NBC two.

And, oddly, the first ABC Supe telecast came the year after Howard Cosell left the network, so he never broadcast one.

Super Bowl XI was played on Jan. 9, 1977, when the Oakland Raiders beat the
Minnesota Vikings, 32-14 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Jan. 9 was the earliest date ever for a Super Bowl.

Hi everyone:

Could you imagine Howard working the Super Bowl? :D

If I remember right, ABC's first Super Bowl was Denver vs. Washington (Won by the Redskins [Sorry Justin :) ] 42-10). I can just imagine some of the things he'd be saying about John Elway and Denver's performance in that game.

Moreover, the things he would've said about Washington QB (And eventual game MVP) Doug Williams probably would've been OUTRAGEOUS.

Just my opinion :)

Cheers for now :)

Dont bet on it. As much as I love the NFL, this is the bone of contention for those of us who wish to see the videotapes.

The league has never permitted a VIDEOTAPE rebroadcast of NFL games. NFL Films is the company of record. And I like NFL Films as much as anyone, but the league continues to be the only league that will not allow its games to re air in full on tape. Occasionally, the networks who have had rights to the games will be allowed to air some highlights of older games on tape, such as ABC with highlights on their last MNF game...but thats it.

Tape of Super Bowl I does exist...ESPN used it when they bent over backwards to please the league on the 75th anniversary show they aired. Ironically it was CBS footage that the net has never shown since that day..but ESPN got a hold of it. ESPN also showed footage of the Green Bay-Dallas Ice BOwl game....Starr to Dowler touchdown pass..and it was sweet....but the league continues to refuse to allow these great highlights to be shown, thanks to the strong arming of NFL films..

However...its ok for NFL Films to (BLEEP) out its footage so we can enjoy the Burger King superimposed over 49ers QB Steve Young running for a touch down....

Theres tons of great footage available...the other leagues offer their tape up...but not the NFL.

Sad.

So I shouldn't take for granted the fact that I've got Super Bowl XXI (1987) to XXXIX (2005) on tape and/or DVD dub? OK, the copies of XXI and XXII aren't that great and XXIX (1995) is in "deep rich" mono. At least I've got them. Since I depsise the Patriots (thanks Denver!), I have yet to play the tape of Super Bowl XXXIX even once (at least since it was first recorded).

Actually, it was Supe XIX (S.F. 38, Miami 16 at Stanford Stadium). The only memorable note was that O.J. predicted before the game that Roger Craig would slash through the Dolphins ... er, make that gain a lot of yards.
