Super Bowl XL in Canada?

Three questions:

1- Who is airing Super Bowl XL in Canada tonight?
2- Any idea what advertising rates are for that coverage?
3- Does the Canadian broadcaster use the same cameras as ABC but put up different graphics? (As if the camera work is a "pool" feed which other countries can use?)
______________

Global, of course. They air the Super Bowl every year.

> 2- Any idea what advertising rates are for that coverage?

I don't know, but if the endless ads for Pizza Pizza, Mr. Sub and Canadian Tire has any indication, I say not much.

I think they take a feed off of the US network (in this casr, ABC). Global has a crew at the Super Bowl, but it's mainly for shots of virtual blimps promoting advertisers and Global, or stadium ads for Pizza Pizza.

They have to use ABC's feed -- otherwise, the game can't be "Simsubbed".

They're also simsubing Global on HDABC for the first time ever. )-:
In previous years, HD was the loophole in Canada that allowed canadains to watch the american commercials.

Along the lines of advertising: does WXYZ-TV (ABC) channel 7 of Detroit or WKBW-TV (ABC) channel 7 of Buffalo get blacked out for cable viewers in Windsor, Toronto or Hamilton, ON tonight?

No. The Global signal is inserted over top of it.

As for cable viewers, those who subscribe to the extra Seattle stations out here in the west (Regina) got the game without any Global-ization of it.

Even so, it was worth watching Global a bit to see the launch of their new on-air look.

Which is usually how simsubbing works -- if the US and Canadian station is carrying the exact same program, the Canadian signal replaces the US signal in that station's slot on cable or satellite.

As for Windsor -- it may be a special case, due to its close proximity of Detroit. In 1999, I stayed at a motel in Windsor, and noticed no simsubs on the Detroit channels. Of course, I also noticed bleedover of WJBK on cable 2 (TVO) and WXYZ on cable 7 (WJBK; don't ask).

I did get to see the American commercials here. I guess someone at Rogers in Fredericton "forgot" to flip the switch :)

Cable companies in Canada refuse to broadcast VHF stations on the same channel on cable, in most cases. I've never understood that. CFTO should have always been just Channel 9, whether OTA or on cable.
______________

I've always had the OTA signal bleed onto my cable channel. Here in Calgary, depending on the weather, I can view Citytv (OTA, channel 5) in the background of Cable Channel 5, which is KXLY/Spokane.
______________

Which is why the CRTC requires cable companies to shift VHF stations off their OTA channels, and why "less desirable" stations end up being put on those channels on cable and suffering ingress problems (CITS 36 showing up on cable 9 in Toronto, for instance.)

I wish the FCC had a similar requirement - living less than a mile from my local Vs, the cable signals are often so bad that I end up disconnecting the cable and watching the local Vs with rabbit ears instead.

(Just in the last month or two, Time Warner here in Rochester has gone to digital cable simulcasts of the local analog signals, with the digital converter boxes remapping internally. That would make things better, if they weren't overdriving the compression and making the signals look awful and break up whenever there's motion on screen.)
______________

But wouldn't Citytv (CKAL) Channel 5 look normal if it was on Cable 5 in Calgary? In Kingston and a couple places to the west, CJOH is on Cable 6, as well as on Channel 6 from Deseronto, and the cable signal west of Kingston looks just fine.
______________

Access: The Education System is on both Cable and OTA Channel 13 in Calgary. It looks okay with no interference and they run 9.9 kW (for the record, I'm not entirely too familiar THAT side of things).
______________
