I kinda like their mix and overall presentation (the low chat and low ads help). Little of the music is my core favorite style but I find it surprisingly tolerable as a safe haven when other stations go off what I want them to be. Maybe I am cutting them more slack than I give others or maybe I am changing, liking the "fresh" sounds compared to my previous patterns and other stations offerings.

Anybody here involved or knowledgeable about their efforts? Or just listen?

KCFL-LP had it's start in Fall City at 104.5 back in 2005 and it had a Seattle translator at 94.5. When the KMCQ move in pushed it off the air briefly, it went south to Aberdeen and finally settled in Elma at 91.3. KCFL at first was a mix of contemporary music and oldies which gravitated towards exclusively '50s-'60s oldies. Today, it encompasses '50s-'80s oldies.

The 94.5 translator was used by KSVR Mount Vernon before being sold to KMIH, which it currently simulcasts.

KCFL is run by Northwest Indy Radio, which has other stations, mostly in the Aberdeen area like standards formatted KYAO 89.5 FM in Ocean Shores. They currently have the KBSG call letters on their station at 104.5 in Fall City (I'm not sure if that's still on underneath the blast of KMCQ.....)
 
Alright, thanks for the information.

'50s-'80s oldies is a bit unusual but it probably helps me stick around. If I start feeling the stuff is too old for too long then they slip in something newer. They make pretty good choices.

They do. The depth and variety of the cuts they play on KYAO alone are very impressive.

KCFL seems to follow that same tradition, skewing younger though. I heard "Who Wears These Shoes" Elton John today, a lost hit I haven't heard in DECADES on the radio.

They REALLY have a good thing going on down there......

Since Bong did such a good job with the history of the two stations, not really much more to say. KYA is based in Ocean Shores, which skews heavily to the retirement population, so a standards format does quite well there. It is also translated into the Aberdeen/ Hoquiam area. Though we have a small cadre of listeners in places like Germany, so the format must be just unique enough. The emails we get are hilarious.

SuperCFL and RadioKYA calls, slogans and jingle packages are homages to KYA San Fran and WCFL Chicago- both market powerhouses in the early rock n roll era.

KYA has been running as a format for a few years and is pretty well nailed down...I liken it to what KIXI used to be like, but with a deeper playlist.

The latest iteration of CFL is still in development. The major formatic is tempo and popularity, not specifically genre. This is an uptempo station with most of the tunes from the late 60s to the mid 80s, but enough other stuff thrown in to keep you on your toes. We are still in testing mode with this station, but Bob willing will soon be regularly found on your radio from Oly to the coast, somewhere on your FM dial.

All airstaff is voluntary and was directly or indirectly recruited from this here radio board. We write and record our show every day because we love radio, that simple. And, yes, we are voice tracked...sort of a necessity when one has a day job. BUT when events are happening in our local listening area we are going to talk about it. And if something big is happening we can and will go "live".

I am just the morning guy-the brains behind the music and the engineering and pretty much everything else sometimes lurks on this board and I will leave it to that person if he or she wishes to add anything more. RockJazz, glad you like it. That's why we're here.

The real SuperCFL was about 35 or 40 years ago in Chicago. Talk about a powerhouse blowtorch of a station, CFL was it, along with 'LS.

Maybe I spoke a bit too much, too soon.

The last few days I have been hearing a lot (more?) of non-rock pop all the way to disco including Madonna. I'll listen to the Bangles or Pat Benitar but not Madonna. I still hear some good, rare stuff but I've been turning away faster. I am just one listener and generally picky about music so it isn't really a surprise. 50s- 80s rock-based would seem really wide, a sufficient range. I am not sure I see the point of going further into other genres- or at least I just don't want to- but I guess others have broader tastes or broader audiences have broader tastes.
 
Only problem with adding too much rock is you'll end up sounding like KJR-FM. NOT a bad thing, but not a good thing either.

'80s pop, like Madonna's Greatest Hits has it's place, but it's not a resting place. And sometimes when you're automated and cover everything (aside from thrash metal or gangsta rap), you'll end up with a lot more repeats of the same artists at least.

'CFL is kicking ass, but it's never easy to kick ass right out of the box. Give it some time and see what happens. They're probably just glad you're listening enough to notice. Which is more than I can say for most COMMERCIAL stations these days.......

Says the person who doesn't have the guts to copyright and pitch his ideas to commercial radio stations. But alas, he'll sell those ideas under the same umbrella of greed.

Granted, most were made before PPM, but take 'em as you see fit. I disclaim any damage, I am not PERFECT, but that's LIFE. LIVE IT.......
