I wouldn't put a dime of my clients' money on the new KRBE for at least 6 months as if it were a new station. In fact I have renewed several of my clients' radio deals for the second half of the year and have cut out KRBE until they prove the changes will not hurt their ratings. Moreover they tell me that they are going for a "broader" audience. Translation: no more 12-24 (their 20+ year cash producing demo). R&R joining them will only translate into another 18-49/25-54 wannabe in a very crowded market. I know Fant and he is a good radio man, but he would certainly not make this decision to abandon the 12-24 stranglehold KRBE has on this market. Any "media operator" with an ounce of common sense would not touch that ATM that has been KRBE for over 20 years. This is a sign of out-of-market accountants and statisticians "predicting" the future of a market that, most likely, they have never even visited. Sounds like Fant was told to convert the demographic reach of the station from 12-24 to 18-49 and his only real option to keep the accountants happy is to go with a known act that has experience in that demo group. Keeping with the dictates to hold expenses down, he probably got R&R for next to nothing. Roula will probably have to keep working in the family business just to make ends meet on what Cumulus will pay her. Fant also probably knows that his position is only temporary as this incredibly dumb idea from Atlanta comes to fruition. The conclusion, I predict, will be a meteoric ratings collapse (big stretch on that prediction) culmininatiing in another complete Cumulus housecleaning that will include the firing of Fant. This is sooooooo predictable. Having been on the station side of the business for 20 years and being part of the corporate take over of station ownership before exiting, you can smell disaster months or even years before it hits. The winner in this whole mess as some posters have said...satellite radio.
