Superbowl Half-time acts

With all the negativity about this year's choice for the half-time show (Black Eyed Peas - check Yahoo sports), let's provide a list of musical talent that should be in half-time shows in future Superbowls!

And with an appeal of mostly older adults (25+), compiling this list should be somewhat simple.

Rolling Stones (again!)

Paul McCartney.......with sidemen Danni Harrison, Sean and Julian Lennon and Zac and Richard Starkey on Drums.

If you have ever seen the Ringo Starr All-star band tour, then you know the above could work.

I'm for that!

I work with three 20-somethings. None of them liked the Peas' show. But none wanted the "dinosaurs" back, either. One said they just should've given Usher the whole show. Another championed Jay-Z. The third thought they should have gone "old school" -- Red Hot Chili Peppers. (This old fogey's suggestion was Green Day, but the consensus was that their music was too politically left wing for Fox, NFL and the advertisers.) It will be interesting to see Madison Avenue's reaction to the halftime numbers. Did the show retain the coveted young-and-gullible demographic to an extent that it didn't matter that the 45+ crowd switched channels? If so, I wouldn't be surprised to see future halftime shows continue to feature more contemporary acts.

Jay z and Usher... Good Lord, I'd rather have dental work.

This brings up the question: What decent groups exist today that could pull this off? I don't mean trotting out the Eagles (once suggested as a halftime act). I mean a group that's relevant today that can play and sing LIVE, be entertaining and wouldn't need to have every fifth word bleeped out? That's a short list. Let's face it, most of the acts today owe their success to Autotune and ProTools and gigging at halftime may be more than they can handle.

Maroon 5, Katy Perry? These days, who knows.

Lady Ga(g) Ga(g)

Billboard lists for year-end 2010 ...........U2, Madonna and AC/DC as the top three grossing acts(arena concerts) not exactly spring chickens...this is one source, Pollstar or Ticketmaster might have a different line-up.

Might as well accept the fact that the demo that's being sought these days values spectacle over vocal talent. It doesn't matter if Lady Gaga or Katy Perry is singing "live", singing through hardware that corrects her pitch automatically, or even lipsynching to an AutoTuned recorded vocal track. It doesn't matter if the backing instrumentals are supplied by a band or by a hard drive. This is the new popular music. This is what radio plays. This is what teens and 20s listen to. This is what mainstream America wants. This is what the Super Bowl wants.

If the NFL wants Vegas-style tasteless spectacle then they got the right people. My guess is the negative reviews greatly outweighed the positive.

As for what mainstream America wants.....again, I seriously doubt the 'mainstream' buys concert tickets or recordings of today's pop 'stars'. Much more likely it's the tweens-to-twenties to who that and they would not be in the NFL's demographic.

The Stupor Bowl has recently been an exercise in futility anyway. The disaster at halftime couldn't possibly make it worse.

precisely why most super bowlers go to the bathroom, kitchen, bar, fridge etc when the halftime show starts..unless it's a band that actually can play, and sing..which does narrow the choices dramatically..anyone know the age demo on super bowl viewers ?? i'm almost 60..and would prefer something a bit more talented..but then..not many groups left that can still do it..yea stones..still the greatest rock band left as a show not the best vocals..but hey it's the stones just the fact they are still alive is worth something lol..mc cartney not quite the voice as he once had..but class act..and you can't argue with the set list either have to offer i know both have done it before..i don't see the eagles ever doing a halftime show..so really..who's left..as great as the baby boomers stars were..they ain't as good as they were..except maybe in our minds..but..what i saw, just briefly sunday as i returned from the bathroom, kitchen, bar and fridge., was nowhere near what i call talent..i don't think i missed a thing.......

How about the "Retirement Village People"

A-A-R-P instead of Y-M-C-A

Naw. Game started while they were dining at Luby's. They made it home by half-time but then it was time for bed. ;D

I remember the lip-syncing thing coming up on American Bandstand in the late 50's. Teens of that day (*ahem*) realized it was not realistic to perform as if they were in a recording studio with a full band. I'm pretty sure Milli Vanilli was busted because they were in concert and were not supposed to be lip-syncing (you know, like when the other 98% of current "talent" does it because they can't wear an autotune device around their neck - and also can't sing).

I'm not sorry for Milli Vanilli. But I am sorry for all those kids I grew up with who practiced endlessly thinking skill, innovation and talent would get them discovered when, in fact, all it takes today is a funny haircut and lack of clothes.

Bandstand, Soul Train, Hee Haw ... they all used lipsynching. Groups would appear on Bandstand and you could see that nothing was plugged in. I remember John Fogerty doing some song on Bandstand while holding absolutely nothing; pantomimed playing a keyboard at one point. But the thing is, none of those acts would try pulling something like that at a live, paid gig, because the crowd paid its money to hear them play and sing. That doesn't matter with the new pop and its fans, who want a spectacular visual show to accompany songs that sound just like they do on the radio.

these posts especially relevant since i watched several episodes of the Monkees this week...lol

the irony of it is the monkees were ready to perform their insturmants and do their recordings themselves but whren they got to the studio they found out how things were to be done.

The Late Don Kishner was the man calling the shots for the Monkee sessions.

We forgot a band about a band that crosses all demographics "The Beach Boys"..they could still rock The Super Bowl" old and young.....

that is if they don't go to Luby's first...
