SuperSnake is out at Jamz

From his facebook page:

Hey everybody, I wanted you to know that when you turn on your radio today at 2pm you will not hear me on 1015. After close to 5 years of passion, dedication, serious time and effort to get this station to where it was, yes, I did say was, we have parted ways. Yes, 1015jamz has fired me, we separated, we left one another, the divorce has come, the marriage is over. I think we are going in another direction. Yes, that’s what they called it, another direction. Say what? SuperSnake fired, I know, right! It’s radio and now the chess game begins. Again, thank you for the support for all these years and for sure the last few.
Super... Out.. two fingers.

It's interesting, I think most Valley DJs are top notch and do a great job connecting with listeners. Supersnake certainly had his own unique style that has served him well for many, MANY, years in the Valley and beyond.

I think the problem lies in that... I'm not sure that he has adjusted his style to match what's important in radio today. He seems to be the guy up on state entertaining an audience, being the center of attention, rather than the guy who's conversing with and engaging with the listener.

Good or bad with radio today, with his style, it'll be tougher and tougher for him to find success. Your name will only take you so far.

My guess is the new weekend jock they hired will take his place. JD is great, but I believe he appeals to a younger audience and less so a working drive home audience. I don't see the station having both a female morning and drive home host.

Other thoughts?

What is the "other direction" they're going in?

When it began, 101.5 went stomping around in Power's back yard - if I remember correctly the words "Hip Hop" were part of the slogan. The for awhile they seemed to be trying to fill a (probably non-existent) voice between Power and Kiss. Then it seems they went full steam ahead against 104.7, playing a lot more pop and dropping the aforementioned words from the name.

Are they gonna go back to more of a hip hop presentation? And if so, why fire the one black guy on your air staff?

"Another direction" has become the euphemism for "a show that doesn't have you". I'd be surprised if there are any formatic changes involved. Snake's a big talent who (I hope) was getting a big paycheck. These days, outside of morning drive, that can be a liability.

I didn't even know this guy was still on the radio. I thought he disapeared from radio about 10+ yrs. ago.

Nope.

Snake went from Power to KISS, and about 5 years ago to JAMZ.

He signed a new multi-year deal at JAMZ less than a year and a half ago. Hope it was a full buyout.

I remember listening to Super Snake on Power 92 in the early 90's - TWENTY years ago. It's quite possible management just decided they should have a young, hip DJ in that slot that can truly relate to the 18-34 audience. As great as he was back in the day breaking new songs by Notorious B.I.G., 2 Pac and Puff Daddy, it did sound a little weird hearing him try to connect with an audience interested in Justin Beiber and Taylor Swift. Not a great fit for what they do today. Maybe CBS should have kept him in the building to add a new, hip vibe to KOOL! (Ummm...kidding).

Seems to me that 1015 is the house of misfit toys, or in this case, dj's. If i do recall, the nutz replaced snake at 923 when power had that signal. Now 1 half of the nutz replaced him again.

I like the fact that Jamz has a DAYTIME weekday new at 2 mixshow featuring new or potential future hits, although it's only about 15 min. long. It's very similar to something I suggested 3 or 4 years ago. Just happened to be flipping around stations in the car and discovered the mix at 2 last Friday. Forgot to check for it Mon. and Tue. though.

Oh, and I still remember when Supersnake first introduced "Scatman" by Scatman John in '95 on Power 92.

That's pretty off subject, but since you brought it up....why would they need a mixshow to break new songs at 2? Why not just play them with proper promotion? As we all know, their DJs butcher the songs and use bad echo effects on every transition. That doesn't really help a songs debut. Not to mention, he would need songs around the same tempo to mix properly (although that rule isn't followed much anymore by these new cats ::) ). Getting rid of the mix would release the handcuffs to play songs normally at any tempo

Seems to me that 1015 is returning to what it was originally launched as: An attempt to beat Power at their own game.

Yes Pink, Katy Perry, and Maroon 5 are real core hip-hop artists.

Actually the New @ 2 mix is only 10 minutes, not 15. That's pretty safe to do a 10 minute quick mix of new music. However, since I start working at 2pm I always forget and miss it, and even if I remember to tune in after logging in, clocking in and setting up shop I've already missed so much of it by the time I get to it that there's no point in logging in to stream it. I'm off Fridays but I never remember to tune in on Friday's. I'm not complaining about it though because it's not like anyone else is mixing or playing new material around 2pm anyway, even if it's only for 10 minutes. Back in the day I would've been super excited about things like this.

Supersnake was cool, but at least the new show has new features of its own, such as the mix to kick it off. 3:30 Dirty Dirty seems old to me now, but I'm sure it's new, fun or exciting for a majority of their core demographics.
